New from Upstate New York

Hello...I'm new to IIS forums. Been back seriously into astronomy for over a year now. Loved it as a teen. I have an older 4.1" f/15 refractor I am restoring and a new S/W 10" f 4.7 Dob.
Having a bit of trouble posting an Avatar...suggestions?
Cheers! -Greg

Welcome Greg

I spent a few years while on assignment to the USA not too far from you down in Poughkeepsie. A great part of the world. Geez I miss it.

Welcome Greg!

LOL Chris - I fell in love with the name Poughkeepsie as we flew into New York this year and it appeared on the inflight map. Since then it keeps cropping up in my life and here it is again!

Six degrees 'n' all that

Thanks for the warm welcome people. Chris, I lived in Poughkeepsie for a short time around 1980, but mostly, New Paltz, Kingston and I grew up in Woodstock, NY. Yes, that Woodstock. Too young in 1969 for the festival, but my sis went.

Seem to have got the picture fixed. -Greg

Hi Brian...yes that is my 4.1" f/15 in the photo. I bought it from the older gentleman who built it. Got it from him around 1972. No idea when he made it or where he got the lens from. -Greg

Greg,
That vintage of lens will probably make it a "Jaegers".
They were prolific and of very good quality!

Greg,
Jaegers sold the different size lenses "as is" without cells.
So the cell that you own could be a custom job or a DIY...

So is there a way to tell an A. Jaegers lens? -Greg

Hi there Greg

I spent one winter in Watertown, NY.

The locals used to joke they had two seasons ,winter and the 4 of July

If where you live is anything like that weather wise, hope you have your dew heaters sorted out!

Not to my knowledge Greg...But...Jaegers were the prime lens makers at that time in the U.S.
They made a 3.1"...4.1" and a 6" Objective.....The lens (may) have a marking engraved on it's edge.

Watertown's a bit too cool for me! 25F here this clear morning. Tonight's forecast is great...ah then the moon is nearly full. Drat!
