Import Tax Advice

Does anyone know when the rules on GST being applied to overseas purchases under $1000 change? I seem to recall it was sometime this year but I am not sure exactly when?

They are currently only proposed changes which are before Parliament and
after the Act receives the Royal Assent would then commence on
either 1 January, 1 April, 1 July or 1 October, which ever of those
particular days comes first.

The Tax Department has signalled 1 July 2017. Given the Federal
Governments difficulties in passing any legislation at the moment,
it may be longer or even never.

Just watch your inbound total, if the shipping and goods value exceeds $1k you may get hit. Be aware that some shipping companies, like UPS, have inbound processing and they will work out the GST etc and ring you to collect any charges due, before they clear it. Splitting shipments does not work if your using UPS and the gear is coming from the same supplier, they will aggregate it. I just paid some inbound charges on a new scope.

One can hope. I have brought forward some purchases to avoid the removal of the threshold. If it is longer that 1st July, which was the original deadline, I definitely won't be unhappy about it.
