Help!!!!!!!!
On my new laptop, W10, on the apps page 10 apps have blacked out,
including Photos, so I can't access any of my images, and also the firewall has gone down, and the facility for turning it on again is greyed out. At least once a day it shuts down, and I have to reboot it. Its only about 8 weeks old,
should I return it, or is the problem likely not the comp itself, but with
Windows, or something malicious. My security software says no threats found.

Raymo, here is one thing you can try first...
Backup any data onto an external/removal drive first.
When you go to restart from within Windows, hold the <SHIFT> button as you click on the Restart option. It will give you some advanced options. One of those is to reset Windows to it's default state.
The only negative with this is that you will need to reinstall any software again, but you would have to do this if you return the computer anyway.
Consider giving it a try, it is a relatively quick process.

I agree, Raymo, just have it replaced, if this is happening at 8 weeks can you imagine what might happen when it grows up.

Thank you all; should Lewis be right I assume that would not be covered
by a warranty, and I would have to get it fixed myself.

Try one of the free online virus scanners - plenty around. Or install a new scanner - I personally prefer Malware Bytes.
Failing that working, save what you can, do a format and reinstall from the protected partition and see what happens.

I ran the top rated free antivirus scan, found some junk files and cookies etc:
but nothing malicious, more or less duplicated what my AVG software found.
I'm going to reset Windows, and see if that fixes it, if not I'll have to take it to someone who knows what they are doing.

You did go thru the license completion right?
You have to go online and complete the process within a certain period.

Take it back to the shop, the more you fiddle the more likely you are to invalidate the warranty. If it is a virus then they can at least confirm it and possibly resolve it but at least then you know what to do next.

Never saw any license completion stuff, and have never done that on any of my previous laptops, or my desktop.
The trouble is the shop is 300 clicks from here.

Hi raymo,
If you have internet access that works, the shop you bought it from should be able to remote into it with Team Viewer or remote desktop and have a look for you. Assuming the shop has support.

Hi Raymo
Thats the problem with windows.
Every newer version seems to have bugs on certain devices.
Because its always doing " fix it even if its not broke routine" in the background there are always little or in your case major stability problems.
Years ago you got an under spec machine tweaked windows by turning off 70% of unnecessary processes and got a very fast and stable machine.
The odd bug especially with new hardware like video cards etc which in some cases there were definitely architecture problems and sometimes no mater what you did some motherboards and pci cards do not mix.
Jump forward 20 years and with all the continuous updated from windows it is still no better and in some cases even worse.
There is definitely a hardware, OS, software issues with some machines but because of the continious updating its hard to nail down what is the problem.
Most of the time you do a full reformat, reinstall and it may be all perfect (for a while until windows comes along and "updates" things).
Good luck with the reset. Normally this does work especially with a shop installed os.
A lot of shops set up one machine and the then image this across multiple machines and then let the machine do the rest in installing hardware etc.
Sometimes this is the problem because what worked on one machine may not work on another and an update bandaid fix works until you start installing software etc.

Thanks Andy, I have reinstalled Windows, and everything seems fine so far.
Just got to install DSS and a few other programs; fingers crossed.
