Have to agree with you Phil re Peters Sol and Venus, I recon you were pretty lucky but considering your consitency and diversity in this contest over the years, you deserved to win on that alone
Interesting to see the full entry pool, the total number of images entered was less than I expected (169) and Deep Sky remains the most competitive category with 3 times as many images entered compared to Solar System.
With the deep sky category attracting the far greatest numbers of entries I suggest that the Deep Sky category be broken down into Galaxies, Nebulae, Globulars and Narrowband.
Especially considering the techniques and approaches for each of these is somewhat different.
This then gives the competition a broader appeal and balance and keeps its astronomy roots firmly intact.
It could even solicit an additional sponsor who sells telescopes/CCD cams/mounts.
The Ice in Space calendar shows a good balance of different types of astro shots as a good example.

Deep sky with David is tough...and was asked by David which image I would have picked.
The answer was "none of the above" (sorry Phil..but hey...so what ) and suggested Martin's M81...which didn't even make the cut...but it's David's call, and if you don't like that, don't enter.
That said...I'm very chuffed at David's response (according to the Sun-Herald) to my "King of pain" image ie: "What the heck is that!?"
As I've said earlier...any image that makes you want to cross a room and take a closer look has to tick a few boxes.

So how did you know what all the entries were at that stage..?
No those are some of the DM winners, the editors choice images are not published on that site.
in my experience journos and media are a law unto themselves and there's no predicting what they will do, even if they have promised one thing something else will happen an hour later! i think they have too many images and don't know what to do with such a rich choice. it may be that other journos have access to the full set of winners and editors picks and may run with different choices? fingers crossed..
Yeh I know but they do have Alex's overall editor's choice winner on that site. At least they were listed on the Herald sun site along all the other winners.

The links to "next image" are broken in many (all) categories ? I can see only 6 images under Deep Sky before my Chrome freezes and spits the dummy. Same on my iPhone. IE doesn't even go past the first image.
Do web designers actually test those pages using variety of browsers, or "it works for me" is the final test ?
I just can't understand the obsession with "latest technology" (or is this "most complex technology") in creating simple web pages that are supposed to show few dozen pictures. If it is complex, it will break.

John Sarkissian sent through these couple of links from the Sydney Morning Herald about Phil's win (first one) and the winners (2nd). You got some nice publicity there Phil! The gallery got some of the details incorrect - eg. alex's comet photo won the widefield, not a runner up. Typical media...
Yes he certainly did. Both Paul and I have been contacted by the Adelaide Advertiser for an article too! I just did a telephone interview and the article on us two SA winners will probably appear in the paper early next week.
