Such a fine image, Bert. Beautifully processed - seamless mosaic and great HDR.

This is now IOTW.

Thanks Mike and Steve. All I am trying to do is to show the sky as if we are in a spaceship where we are close enough to see colour and resolve stars with the naked eye.
The more I learn the more I realize that we can never depict the sky in all its beauty. It should not stop us from trying though.
How long would it take to do a ten by ten degree mosaic with the Hubble Space Telelescope?

Bert

That is gorgeous. Just look at all those dark dust lanes you hardly ever see...

Wow - a perfect rendition of the area fo sure! Such depth to the star field - almost looks 3 D across such a large area. Awesome work.

What is even more amazing (and the type of thing that I love about astronomy) is that pick any two stars next to each other in Berts image (no matter how close they are to each other), then realise that it would take us several Lifetimes (or much much longer) to travel that distance between the two.

Space is BIG!

Go actually try it on Berts smallish size image: http://d1355990.i49.quadrahosting.co.../CAR_MOS_S.jpg

Amazing huh!

I would not put up high resolution images if I wanted to hide my efforts in a locked drawer. As I am retired I do this for fun and to keep me as 'sane' as last week.

Steve, Ron and Rob being of the old school in science I am a firm believer in free exchange of all information especially if it can help others with their own efforts. Most of my knowledge came to me from very many smart people that were way ahead of me in time and expertise, so if I figure out something new it is my duty to pass it on to try and balance the books even a small bit.

My lecturers and colleagues always told me very good science was about very good questions, not answers!

Hi Bert,
I now have this printed as a 10x15 poster and it looks amazing!
For some reason, I couldn't access the 36meg file (tho I hadn't any problems doing so other days), so I settled for the 14meg version. Everything is so beautiful and sharp- the keyhole nebula and E.Carinae is so easily visible, star clusters, dark lanes of nebula through the whole image- it is just absolutely breathtaking!!!

My first attempt at getting this printed wasn't so successful though. I tried out an 8x12 version from BigW Photos and it was hugely over exposed. The stars were nice and bright but you couldn't make out any details- no keyhole, no E.Carinae visible, everything was just a mush of bright. So Off I went to Harvey Norman to try again. It is now in a big, beautiful frame!
Thank you!
