Mirror recoat

After much procastrinating Ive finally decided to get it done. After a call to Issac at Advanced Optical Components (Chi Qin Co) I plan to take my 10 inch Sutching made mirror down in person by train, to Campsie, where it will get a nice new Al coating with quartz overcoat, which should last a lifetime. I know ppl post theirs down but I cant bring myself to do it hehehehe. I will box it up in its original mirror box and take it down myself.

Have you researched coatings Scott?

I have heard that certain 'enhanced' coatings can be detrimental to the final surface quality and degrade premium optics.

Just thought I'd mention it before it was too late
Perhaps ask Mr Suchting himself if you havent already covered this with him.

Howdy
Yes I have, Eddie has an overcoated mirror and its fine, as does Paul (Photoncollector) In fact Paul had his 8 inch recoated with quartz overcoat and the quality was amazing, fantastic resolution on Saturn one night with it. His new 12 inch scope is factory overcoated too, as are all the GSO reflectors I believe The overcoat is a must as it keeps the Aluminium pristine so can get max reflectivity every time.
I did consider Silver with Magnesium Flouride overcoat but George, Newcastle mirrormaker said he had such a coated mirror once and it went dull over time. If I lived 100s of Kms inland well away from the coast I might have gone that way, but for durability will stick with the Al and Quartz.
Thanks for the advice though.

Dave, I plan to head down next Tuesday, basically a week today, and cautiously hope to have it back the following week or even that Friday Yes it will not be let out of my sight till handed over to Issac himself.

Good to hear that your are finally getting it coated.

Isaac is a lovely fellow and when your'e there he will no doubt show you all his other stuff he has in his back shed.

I should get my secondary back from him sometime this week, tell him that Ed and George from the NAS said hello.
