6" double folded APO refractor/8" Quantum Maksutov for sale

two rare and unique scopes.
6" fluorite double folded refractor, optics and design by barry adcock, construction by me.this APO won an award for construction at Ilford. the box is made of a 4mm al/phenolic material, outer cover, leather! the mirrors are 20th wave overcoated zerodure. f/10.5 ,scope weight,10k. included, light weight ply case.$4,500, little more than the cost of the glass!
8" Quantum, possibly one of the original eight! this maksutov gives stunning images.the optics are at the very least, as good as a 7" Qestar. the extra inch says it all . Questars never stood a chance against this! the mak comes with two mounts. a 4" Unitron G.E.M.,rebuilt with roller bearings, stepping moter drive. an altaz/dob type for easy viewing. a proffesional instrument case can ship this baby to Mars!
I will consider offers better than $10,000. I'm 81yrs+ health issues, if you are woundering why I would part with these marvilous scopes. phease phone,[02 4421 2255] as it takes me forever to type! thanks for your interest,

Is the APO a doublet or a triplet and who made the lens?

Any idea of the Strehl?

Greg.

The first post indicates the optics were made by Barry Adcock.

For those who do not know Barry, he is a former President of The Astronomical Society of Victoria, and was the convenor of the Lunar and Planetary section of that society for decades.

He is without a doubt one of the finest optical workers anywhere in the world. Any optic that has his name on it is unquestionably as good as it gets. I have viewed through multiple scopes that Barry has made and the are astonishing. Another friend has a 6" refractor made by him and has been known to use ridiculous magnifications!

Barry taught me to figure mirrors years ago by helping me refigure a 12" f5 mirror that had been screwed up for me by another mirror maker I had paid. He came to my home regularly as we figured it on a star!! It got to the point where I was putting cerium on my thumb and running it around the mirror a couple of times to improve the figure. He is a true perfectionist.

Suffice to say that if a Barry Adcock optic is for sale, and it is the scope you want, don't even bother looking through it, it will be outstanding...
cheers

They are true family treasures and heirlooms. Must be heartbreaking parting with them . I hope your kids and grandkids truely appreciate how unique and valuable these scopes are , because if you don't find a buyer in the astro fraternity and you die , it would be a crying shame for them to windup sold for bugger all to some crook of a pornbroker just to get a quick liquidation of the estate.

Bequeth to the local club maybe ? Least then your pride and joys will go to a good home and continue being enjoyed by people who will appreciate their quality.

This happened to some very high quality porcinlin figurines from my wife's aunti's estate (worth a small fortune that she had collected over 70 years) when my stupid pisspot father-in-law inherited a few of them in his share of the estate .... sold them for $10 each (probably went straught to the nearest pornbroker as soon as he was given them) !!!! My wife is very upset as she loved the aunti and loved the figurines and knew how valuable they actually were and hoped he would hang onto them in her memory or pass them onto his daughters or granddaughters ..... The man is a bloody moron.

Beyond my means at present , I'd be chasing the 6" APO if I had the readys .... sounds like a wonderful telescope .

Would love to see more pictures of it - closeups of the business end and the glass .

Do you have any photos taken through it ?

I once had the pleasure of looking through a monster 8" Adcock Flourite (?? in the 70s) and I was ..... WOWED !!!! much better stars than I could see through the 8" Meade newtonian on the nextdoor mount to it . He was truely one of the greats in aussie astronomy .... not a name I have heard for a very time.

I too hope these end up with someone who appreciates them. Imagine having the skill and time to figure optics like that......

Dear Enquirers,

Quantum 8 inch Mak Cass sold to me.

I have also taken the 6 inch Fluorite folded refractor back with me to Melbourne for on sale by myself on the behalf of Jacob Apfelbaum.

The 6 inch Fluorite refractor's optics were hand crafted by Australia's best refractor hand craftsman (by light years) Barry Adcock. You will see references to his capability from others in the notes on this ad.

Please feel free to enquire directly to myself on the 6 inch fluoprite refractor sale, as I will be taking the enquiries for it from this point.

I will also be posting a new ad including a number of new photos next week, plus also technical details on this system.

Rgds,
Astromelb.
