Tarantula and my new QHY8L

Finally after a number of nights of trials, tribulations and learning curves, I have managed to get off a first off "proper" image with my newly acquired QHY8L.

It was a pretty warm night here in Adelaide, so only managed to get the camera to run at around -8. The image comprises of three 8 minute subs (with the ED120) plus one bias, dark and flat frame. For my next imaging run, I will attempt to attempt a larger number of subs, however, as I am still coming to terms with using an OSC CCD in lieu of the DSLR, last night did not want to take too many subs in case I was "way off".

The thing I found surprising is when shooting with my DSLR, in metro Adelaide I had to use my IDAS P2 filter for 8 minute subs, however with the QHY8L, I had better results without the filter.

Anyhow, I am pretty happy with this initial result. But still on quite a bit of a learning curve, especially with regards to flats. But, slowly getting there.

Indeed you are Daniel.
Im sure you'll get advise from those more qualified than me so I wont comment other than to say I like the wide field of view and the image overall ... well done.

Hope the weather lets you get back to it soon ... but I dont need to tell anybody on the east coast about that

Good start Daniel, as more time goes by, the learning curve will flatten out a little and you'll start to feel a bit more relaxed with it all. Have fun.

A good choice of first subject, having come from DSLR and those being so poor at representing the tarantula. Nice first image.

Nice work Daniel, Lots of great detail in the image in fact quite a bit more than you have extracted.
I hope you don't mind as I have had a little play with your image to give you an idea of what can be gained from some very small tweaks.

I stretched the image a little more in curves, selectively increased the saturation on the blue and red and a small adjustment to shadows and highlights (Highlights only).

A nice image worth spending a little more time with. Great start. It does get easier.

Following on from Dougs improvements, I have had another bit of a play, and must say that I am a lot happier with this reprocess. Thanks for the tips Doug!!

Not bad at all. I would possibly add a bit more saturation but that's largely a personal preference thing.
