Martin Pugh makes APOD – 2nd Sept 2008

Wake up H0ughy, you’re meant to be the guardian and Union Rep for Southern Hemisphere astronomy! It’s Martin’s turn on APOD today, with a stunning image of NGC 1316, showing the results of a galactic collision!

Top stuff Martin and congratulations!

Cheers

Dennis

Congrats Martin on a wonderful image.

Wow, the second in as many days for IIS members.

Are we going for a hat trick? Does any one have anything planned?

Cheers

Another APOD to your collection...
Lovely work Martin. Well deserved recognition for your efforts.

...hmmm, perhaps I should treat APOD seriously and actually submit something

Yes you should and they don't care if you used a pro observatory even ...and you certainly use an SBIG, so you are a shoe in!

Taken with an SBig too which is as it should be .

I've never seen an image of this object before.

There are so many great objects to image.

Greg.

Once you've discovered the power of the self guide (force) it's hard to return

Congrats Martin, nice work. I see a lot of the type of processing you used now on this, is it just gausian blur on the arms, or something else?.

Yes Jase, its your turn

Peter, you need self guide to get an APOD?, ummm . Yes, yes, its the purist way, but a complete pain in the butt IMO, not essential.

Sheesh Mike, yours wasnt with an SBIG, get one (you know you should ), or get over it .

A DSLR huh? well well..we know you looooove those!

now about the SBIG's.....

Better stop this fun now...Sorry Martin, I (we) am only joshing, sorry to highjack this thread about your image

Your image is fantastic regardless of what camera you used and just the sort of thing that should be presented to the web in the way APOD does, all the non imagers out there need to see this stuff! Besides you will eventually be imaging with an FLI too so you can really test my theory ..ooops

Certainly ups the web site hits this APODing huh?...1000's of hits to the CG4 image at my website in the last 24hrs alone ...right! must get an SBIG.....or just lie! sorry, sorry....

Mike

Hello everyone...and many thanks for the kind words....of course, I am delighted as anyone should be. Those guys at APOD do choose in some strange ways....for example, I regard my best image to date as the 5 panel mosaic of Corona Australis ....which took 3 months to image, is around 40 hours exposure, and something like 180 individual frames.....APOD not interested. Shoot a 90 second RGB of an eclipsed moon, take 5 minute to process it...send it in along with millions of others who must have photographed it, and you get an APOD?!

Anyway, its great fun...thanks a lot

Fred.....I combined a few hours of Lum binned 2x2 to pick out the outer galaxy halos, and teased them out using curves and contrast stretching.

cheers
Martin
