After seeing Mike's great image of this unusual galaxy I took this image a week ago and added more as weather allowed. Its still rising really in the east so its early days imaging this one. I'll probably add more data during next no moon if weather allows.

It shows some interesting interaction with the nearby neaigbouring galaxy. Also shows some interesting shell structure like Centaurus A.

Again a grand looking image Greg, nice work - god it must be tempting to put that beast at your dark site .

There is so much in the halo fo this galaxy, I do however think that luminous arc lower right of the galaxy isn't actually part of the galaxy could it be a processing artifact? It doesn't seem to be in other deep images of this galaxy..?

Really nice image Greg, I had a go at this myself and was a little disappointed aperture and focal length wise. There really is a lot going on in the frame with heaps of detailed smaller galaxies. Can't wait to watch it progress.....

Very nice Greg, Got it humming now. This is a very busy field that I would be happy with just half the detail you have managed and at a relatively short exposure. The little galaxy in the lower right is the pick of the bunch for me but the overall number of galaxies is amazing.

Beautifull.

SOrry I posted this first as you put me onto it. I was waiting for you to post but I guess weather delayed that. The advantage of being able to flick a switch in your backyard if the weather looks OK for a few hours?

I think you are right that it is exaggerated. I will reprocess it to try to get that more accurate. As you say the scope at my dark site would excel. It should also do well when objects are in the western half of my sky which is quite dark.

I did pull back the image quite a bit to what appeared to be accurate but there is a chance some of that is not accurate. A fully dark site would be ideal for sure. Gradient processing is quite tricky and also the scope tends to have a fairly bright central area in the image (so did the Tak BRC250 - probably a consequence of having a corrector). It flats out but the flats have to be of very good quality. Ideally I wait until objects are at the zenith and I image them to the west where my skies are darkest and close to my dark site's western skies for darkness. Perhaps some of the gradient came through with some layers when rubbing through a mask.

Oh well back to the drawing board - or better I will wait until its in the western half and take some more exposure time. There is however some faint ring there as I can see something in the subs through the gradients. I planned on much longer total exposure times but the run of bad weather on no moon weeks has been appalling. Perhaps we'll get a good run soon.

Greg

Thanks Darren. I am still learning about how to maximise results with this scope.

Yes I am amazed at the number of background galaxies. I have some subs of NGC247 and that has even more.

Hey I don't own any part of the sky, I ain't got no copyright ...but yes I am waiting, good thing is that by the time I get out again 1316 should be higher earlier

Thanks Paul. This scope is making imaging a whole lot easier.

Its an unusual galaxy. I'll be shooting some more time on this if I get some clear weather in the no moon weeks.

That is a gorgeous deep image with dust detail and strong outer halo.

The image is beatiful! What does an unprocessed picture of NGC 1316 look like? (I'm still learning)

Thanks

Thanks very much John. its an unusual galaxy. There seems to be quite a few like this with interactions with nearby galaxies. One wonders if our Milky Way has some big tidal stream of stars connecting the Magellenic Clouds with it.

Thanks Bart. Unprocessed single image does not look a lot like that!
