Moon Halo

By chance, I decided to have a peek out the window last night to see what the weather was like and I happen to spot a Halo around the Moon at around 10pm.

It was a lovely sight that I have never personally seen before. I quickly grabbed the camera and set it up on a tripod. I captured a couple of shots and headed back inside. I had another peak outside again about 15 minutes later and the Halo had disappeared.

Jupiter was just on the outside of the Halo at the bottom right of the image. I am also very happy that I was able to capture some background stars as well.

All taken with my Canon 450D a tripod, 20 second exposure at ISO200. Reduced to 1000px in PS.

Beautiful. I was staring at it myself.

I got my two year old son to have a look as well. All he had to say was "WOW ... Where's Orion?" lol.

Thanks Bindibadgi and Petra.

It was definitely a great sight. I still have a few images left that I need to go through but here is one I just finished processing.

A close up of Jupiter and the Halo.

Hi Vincent,

From memory the focal length I used was 18mm on the standard 18-55mm Canon lens.

Nice shot, Matty. I like the way Scorpio curls around at the top of the halo!!!. Very surreal shot

that's amazing! I was just yesterday looking through a bunch of photos online of halos around the sun - so cool to see one around the moon.

That second one you posted really shows how even though Jupiter looks a lot like a bright star with the naked eye, it's definitely got a much bigger angular diameter when you zoom in on it!

any chance I could get the full res photo? (I promise only for personal use!)
