Reading some of the new stories this is reading like a Tom Clancy novel. The British and US must fight the perilous conditions and time to recover advanced technology before the Russians. The Chinese probably already have it.

Or maybe it is the next story in the James Bond franchise.

Probably the Chinese provided the technology in the first place.
This whole F -35 purchase saga reminds me of the F-111 TSR2 F 4 Phantom
Debacle of the 1960's
Millions of Pounds/Dollars overruns,cancelation,skulduggery in high places and between governments etc
Great Britain came out the looser just as they have come out of in this aircraft
deal.

The F-35 program is more akin to the Eurofighter program. Always an issue when you have multiple fingers in the same pie. Trouble is all countries have their own unique OCD and then expect a single platform to fulfil it then as was the case with Eurofighter you had certain countries, e.g. Germany, steering it in their direction.

The UK had a good reputation for design and building aircraft but then they closed that industry.

That's what I was referring to as skulduggery.
The American sabotaged the UK aircraft industry with
the help of the Government of day.
The only thing Britain got out of the whole sorry mess
was the Concorde,but even that was compromised by restricting
its use in landing to only a few US Cities.
