Fireball west of Perth @ 0143 on the 19th March (link to video included)

I captured this using UFO Capture and a watec CCD camera, have been running this setup for about 6 months now and had a few nice ones but nothing like this nights event.

Cheers,
Grahame.

I haven't done any calibration on this camera yet, and the calibrated meteor cam running metrec did not capture it

Hey, Grahame, great video.

I think I saw this with my naked eye in Brisbane on the same night. I couldn't sleep and ducked outside for a breath of fresh air. It came across from the east and traversed the length of my roof line at such a small downward trajectory that it appeared to be travelling almost parallel to it.

It was much larger than a shooting star, moved more slowly and was much lower in the sky not to mention the fact it was travelling near horizontally. I watched it for maybe 5 seconds before it disappeared from view behind other houses to my west.

Do you think it could have been the same thing? Surely a fireball wouldn't last long enough to travel across the entire continent, would it? I have no idea what the time was when I saw it but it was late, maybe between 11pm and 1am Brisbane time, but it was definitely the same night. I certainly have never seen anything like it before.

hello Grahame,

Nice work there mate! Now tonight instead of thinking of nice fluffy sheep grazing peacefully in the bright spring sunshine I'll be wide awake waiting for a piece of hot molten rock to come crashing through my roof. no seriously nice capture. I've been lucky enough to have experienced 2 others like yours that were trully memorable. Funnily both were while fishing on some remote beach. Lucky though you have it recorded.
Howz your steup work? Do you have to trawl through the footage in the morning or does it only capture a sizey event?

cheers
simmo

Hi Kolya and Simmo,

Kolya I doubt these events are linked - the fireball's direction was south-west to north east.

Simmo - ufo capture has lots of smarts built in for detection and I have found the default settings are work well at dropping aircraft and keeping meteors (and Bats/lightning)

Hi Koyla, welcome to IIS
Grahame's capture was at 1:43am Perth time, so 3:43am Brizzy time.
Sounds like the one you saw was impressive! 5 seconds is a big fireball.

Okay, so maybe it was more like 2 now that I think about it...

I hope you do wind up capturing some anomalous flying beasties some day, Grahame. The Qld police will be using drones next year when the G20 comes to town. I'm curious as to what those look like. I'd love to know what else is flying around up there.

Great to finally see a video of this, I too saw it from just over the NSW border heading over the east horizon. It was very impressive & bright.
