Gary,
You should try it on your 200mm F/2.8L.

Humayun

I might try it with my lenses, mix'n'match and see what I can come up with.
They're all Canon so I'm sure the parts are interchangeable.

I never realised how many parts make up a lens. Interesting.
Atleast you now know you can lenses for more than one task.

Interesting .... I quite like the EF 17-85 IS Zoom for general use , it's a better lens than my old CEMKO 30-100 Zoom that was my work horse on my old Minolta XD5 (and isn't too shabby (67mm diameter front lens) for wildfields of constellations , comets and starfields either).

, it will be a big mug alright, but I do need plenty of coffee!,
Pitty about your lens but as I have heard they are a nice general use lens.
But don`t try it on your nice 300mm lens!
cheers

Andrew,
If you can come up with the equivalent of a 200mm F/2L or a 300mm F/2.8L, let me know.

Matty,
Some very clever put these things together. When I saw the first photograph on that post, I was surprised to see how many parts go to make the thing!

Gary,
That wasn't my lens -- it was a post I found through another forum.
Also, I wish I had a 300mm.

Humayun

Played with the 40D and my 17-85 IS today for the first time (family had a wedding and reception this avo) and , well while I am still only just starting to get the hang of the settings on the 40D, I have been pleasantly surprised by the performance of 17-85 IS.
I still haven't sussed out how to manually set the ASA on the camera yet , not that I've give much time to that little problem yet.
I like the electronic zoom in feature while viewing feature when examining the photos after taking them .
Yet to try out the camera and 17-85 IS for astrophotography.
