Scott Mellish has passed away

It is with deep sadness that i inform all who knew him that Scott Mellish world renown astro sketch artist and passionate member of The Astronomical Society Of New South Wales has suddenly passed away.
Scott'S knowledge of the night sky went beyond the Amateur level ,he regularly gave lectures on Astronomical subjects at ASNSW evenings and was best known as the quiet achiever. He will be missed by all and Wiruna will not be the same without him

I am at a loss for words at this aweful, aweful news.

I am stunned, gutted, cold, sad.

Such a gentleman, generous with his time and knowledge.

I am feeling crushed.

Rest in peace, mate.

This comes as a deep shock.

I only communicated with Scott last week and posted him some items
on Friday afternoon.

Scott was an extremely talented observer and sketcher and a highly
valued member of the Society.

Our condolences to Scott's family and friends.

Gary & Mai

It seems fitting to dedicate this weeks IOTW to an astronomy sketch artist, one who just recently wrote an article about Sketching DSO's using the Mellish Technique.

Alex's brilliant sketch of Eta Carina is this weeks IOTW, in dedication to Scott Mellish.

A tragic loss to ASNSW and the amateur astronomy community.

I did not know Scott but am a very close friend of his sister Jodie. The family is devastated by Scott's passing and your wishes and thoughts here I will pass on to her. Jodie was planning on visiting me in New Zealand in two weeks time for a holiday. It may be delayed a little but I am sure that I will hear more about her brother when she visits.

Thats really very sad news. Scott was a quiet achiever and dedicated deep sky observer and sketcher, and regular contributer to the journal UNIVERSE who really lived the life dictated by his love of the stars - spending every new moon at the Wiruna dark sky site belonging to ASNSW, and always working on new improvements at the property . I used to see him a lot when I attended those weekends regularly. He was always a gentleman -quietly spoken and thoughtful but quick witted. He is very much loved by the ASNSW core , who are still hurting from the loss of another valued friend and Wiruna regular Mike Kerr at similarly much too young age. Unfortunately Scott couldn't attend the last SPSP so I missed out on talking to him and observing with his 22" scope which I had the pleasure of making the optics for years ago.

My deepest sympathy and condolences to Scott's family and friends.

Such a great loss. What a talented and generous man. I had not met Scott, but in my few communications with him he clearly seemed a man of great and gentle heart. My thoughts are with those close to him.

What very sad news, my family and I extend our condolences to his family.

Living out here in the very far west of NSW our only contact with Scott and the rest of the ASNSW crew has been on our visits to the SPSP over the years.

We really do feel this so deeply, as was the case also with Mike Kerr, that still remains so fresh in our memories, like two daggers to our hearts in such quick succession.

This really was the loss of a kindred spirit and I am sure all within the wider astro community will morn this loss greatly.

RIP Scott Mellish
