I am however aware that I am extreemly fortunate to have found
such an enlightened employer.
I had long hair for 7 years, down to my backside. Also had a real job at a Nuke Power Station.
The top brass always used to ask when was getting a haircut and my reply was always when I get a real job. Forget which song those words come from.
Now that my hair is short i must be honest and say I dont miss it at all.
Especially when sleeping as invariably the pony tail would get trapped somewhere and when you roll over you almost break your neck, Not to mention all the other hassles and tribulations. I have thick strong hair. My pony tail is in my cupboard in a plait that is about 65cm long.
Now if you have thin weak hair and balding on top then I guess you have a puny tail which may not be a hassle at all.
Perhaps we should start new thread for pics of all the long and short haired aging hippies. Thank god I never wanted to be a pilot.

Mind you, long hair isnt always bad.... Look what happened to poor old Samson who fell for that bit of crumpet - Delilah - who got his secret about his strength out of him...Off comes his hair one dark night, the Philistines capture him because he has lost all his strength, and make him blind. but HA HA, he has the last laugh because his hair grows back again , and he eventually pulls the temple down on top of himself and also 3000 Philistines. so I wouldn't risk taking ALL my hair off Might be an each way bet to just settle for a medium hair cut.

My advice , if aviation is want you really want as a career, is forget about all the long hair and trendy music. Concentrate on science and mathematics.
Above all keep visualising yourself as a successful airline captain, work hard at your studies and those dreams will come to fruition.
I'v been flying aeroplanes for two months, i'v been playing guitar for over 6 years. And i'v liked metal as long as I can remember, but private schools have terrible music programs and their all into this 'satanic' garbage that goes along with metal.

Caleb,
I know what you are going through and you seem to be taking a bit of a bashing from some of the people here but the reality is private schools want you to have a hair cut. I went to an average state school and my wife went to a strict private school. Most of my mates from school had long hair and got tat's and now 15yrs later most are owning and running million dollar buisness including myself. We are having a 15yr school reunion in 2 weeks and I was talking to the organisers and we were amazed at how many are running their own companies. My wife and her friends all went onto uni and are very succesful in their own right. The moral of the story is you will get out of life what you are prepared to put in and hair makes no difference. So don't let people put you down because you want long hair, just that if the school rules include short hair and your parents send you there, then I don't think you can win on this one mate. Just remember go through with it, then when you make your first million, grow long hair and show them what its all about .

Matt.

hi Caleb
If I may ask, how old are you and how many years do you have left at this school?
My point was if you aspire to be an airline pilot then surely the hair and music is not really that important to your life. Sure you can play guitar and whatever music you like but you do that in your private time. As far as the choice of music is concerned, that is personal preference. At the end of the day classical music training can make you a better musician whatever music you play.
You mention that you have been flying for 2 months. What aircraft do you fly and have you gone solo yet?
There is a big difference between a private pilot licence and a commercial transport pilot licence. I'm sure that you realise this.
If i was in your shoes I wouldnt let the hair and music issue cloud my judgement. I would concentrate on getting the required grades and getting out of the school as quickly as possible.

and by the way.....

Oh, and as an aside: one man's quote may well be another's poison - and to issue a statement and then hide it in the clothing of another's comments does no-one any favour.....

Best wishes to all, Darryl.

Skwinty, old mate, in actual fact Jazz is probably the most exacting form of music that any one can play. An awful lot of both Classical and Rock musicians would back me on this point. I like all 3 types AND folk, blues, electronica, Cajun, Zydeco, whatever. Let's stop picking on musical genres and get back to sinking the boot into each other. Speaking of which, the tone of your post suggested to me that you didn't entirely believe that young Caleb is in fact training to fly, but I'm sure I must have got that wrong?
Let's see; I've got a real job, I don't think I've made any spelling or punctuation errors and I'm not a musical elitist or snob and I generally take people at face value. No hair cut or tie, though. Damn! I must be a loser.

Gee whiz Dogstar
Talk about putting the boot in!
At no time did I attempt to classify any musical genre into any form of rank or importance or scale of difficulty. Nor at any time did I suggest that Caleb is not learning to fly.
I asked the question out interest as I also have had many thousands of hours airborne in many different types of aircraft.
The chirp I made about get a haircut and a real job was a quote from some song as I mentioned and as far as classing any one as a loser that wasnt me, however sunny jim, if the cap fits, by all means wear it.

Sincere apologies Skwinty. Re reading the thread leads me to believe I may have got that wrong. Still don't quite understand the classical music reference though. Putting the boot in is a time honored sport in Australia which most of us enjoy enormously and in good humour. I've got you on this point though. My name's not sunny jim. He lives down the road and has short hair.

Steve Morse (ex Dixie Dregs) plays shred, has (or had) long hair, and is a commercial airline pilot.

Makes you think... (Well, not much, actually.)

havent read the entire thread...

a few words:

1. hair grows back when you cut it. it is a common thought or old wives tail that if you get a hair cut it doesnt grow back.

2. you will not lose your super human strength. this only happened to hurcules.

3. wig

4. hank rollins

5. long hair does not = rock or metal (see 4)

6. dont know what year you are in but as i tell my own daughter, school is such an infantisimally small part of your life so dont stress the small stuff. once you reach teh age of 30 you will have forgotten it all anyhow.let say you are in year 11... one year of short hair wont kill you. after you leave school you can do what you want with it.

1. When your over 50, it doesnt.......well, not as much.
2. Metal Axe heros are much stronger with long hair, Head banging with a crew cut is just sad.
3. You kidding !!
4. Umm, that would be Henry Rollins, and well, hes an exception, look at the bod, he actually looks like Hurcules.
5. Yes it does, of course it does, duh, (except for 4).
6. No, hair at school is big stuff, bigger than after school.
7. I entered that into my calculator, its wrong.

Caleb dump the posh private school and be a real rebel,or keep your hair long and face the wrath of the powers that be. Make a stand or be stood on. I refused to wear a tie at my secondary school and policy at the time was to sent the student home to get one. I turned up every morning without a tie for six weeks and was sent home every day. In the end I was allowed in school without a tie as i was being victimized and that is against the law. The down side was the teaching staff made my life hell until I graduated, but i was the one grinning every morning and afternoon once the last period bell rang. Small victories taste great.
