school making me get a haircut

the school i go to is a private school and they want me to get a haircut.
im male
the girls are aloud long hair
males arent aloud jewelery either (seems prety sexist)
they say its part of the uniform (i ask them to show me this writen next time they ask)
above collar
they told me a few i times to get a haircut and several time i did but i didnt do it right away and i still argued with them.

I though you people could help me with this as many of your display pictures have you with long hair and you may be a 'hippies' wich is fine with me but i want long hair becuase i like METAL as in music and i dont want to perfom on stage with short hair.
They cant control my outside life. Yeah sure, a tie can be easily placed on and off but i dont mind wearing a tie, iv never walked home with it on though.
So... any tips

Hey Caleb,

I don't rate your school as being a very good one, I think they are worrying about improving the wrong thing altogether in your case .

Now to the point, get the minimum haircut you think you can put up with yourself, and take the receipt in to show school. If it is still no good, pick out the longest haircut around school including male staff and say "Well how about that style".

You should know that grown men get told to get haircuts on the job every day (cops, machinists, cooks, biological lab staff etc) so it isn't unusual.

I have to tell you the sad news, school is a protected environment, the world is a lot harsher than your experience, where you just don't ever get whatever you want whenever you want it. And yeah, I am an old fart (60) but I was in a rock band for many years and I do remember.

Lotsa Luck, you have at least got spirit

Gee mate you are lucky you didn't go to school in my day, getting a hair cut was minor, if you didn't wear full uniform to and from school, and wear your cap, you were just about expelled and got six of the best across the arse just for good measure.

I see a lot of young students these days and very few look like they are proud of their uniform, and/or their college they go to, standards have really dropped, i reckon.

So get a hair cut, and get over it. PS you can still enjoy your Heavy Metal with short hair

I went thru same thing in sixties in the high school and in the college. You better learn one think early. If you don’t conform, life is not going to be easy. I never did and I don’t regret it, but that’s up to you.

If you have to get a hair cut then at least try to set a trend

Keep within the rules, but make the rules work for you. How about getting your hair colour changed and then going for short dreds like Loti Takiri or Andrew Symonds and then if the PTB (powers that be) complain point them out as ambassadors.

Caleb,

You nearly had my sympathy then, until that admission about metal . Actually I used to get into Purple, Sabbath etc until some (6-12month) older and wiser astronomers turned me onto Yes, Crimso, early Floyd etc. And the hair length didn't have to change!

The problem you have is of course very common; I even recall seeing footage of the Beatles being told to get a haircut, and they were only mop-tops at the time.

In my case they wanted about 3/4 of the male student population to get a haircut (and about the same proportion of the female cohort to get a longer skirt). The weight of numbers of course gave us a great advantage. It was impossible to punish that many miscreants at the same time and if they tried to pick you off in small groups it would be years before your turn came around. So, is it only you or do you have allies? You can try the 'why should I when his is so long?' line. Also, what real leverage do they have? I certainly wouldn't miss any school over the issue but I might have tolerated some lesser punishments. Also, where do your parents stand? I actually copped it worse at home than at school (boy could mum nag), but my parents wouldn't have supported any 'over the top' punishment. I also kept some heat off me by being academically pretty good and otherwise well behaved.

So how much longer do you have to put up with the hassle? Probably looks like a long time to you but nearly nothing to us more senior contributors . After that you'll be free to grow it as long as you want for as long as you want. That likely means about 10 years. By then you will find it /too hard to care for/always in the way/a disaster on windy days/too hot in summer/a pain in bed/ and get it cut of your own free will. Such is life.

Since when did short hair make you get a better education.

When I was at public school I always had long hair, earrings, a ponytail and a full beard by my 17th birthday (and not bumfluff either), not one teacher even gave a stuff, they were more concerned with my education

I went on and did a BSc in Geology at the ANU and my hair was a crewcut compared to some of my lecturers. I have always remained a hippy at heart but with a love of science and yes the two can coexist

Private schools seem to think they have some sort of responsibility to determine how society should think and act and charge you a fortune to prove their point rather than get on with the job in giving you a decent education.

I think I turned out pretty well, I have worked as a geologist for many years and now work as an Admin & IT manager at the Canberra Hospital and still with a ponytail, earrings and a beard allthough they are a bit greyer than it used to be. I'm also a member of the NSW RFS and no one seems to care one iota what I look like when we are fighting a fire, just how well we do our job.

By the sounds of it you probably won't win against the old farts but if you go to Uni they wont give a stuff either way.

Best of luck Caleb and stick with the metal Dude.

G'day Caleb and commiserations my young friend. Hard to believe that this sort of crap is still going on. I'm in my 50's now but have a long full beard and long hair in a pony tail (and I don't mind a bit of metal myself.) The thing is though that at my public high school, we were all comdemned to short hair styles. Yes, it's stupid. Yes, it's pointless. But you won't be at school forever. Let the silly narrow minded old fogeys have their day today; they obviously need it. Tomorrow and the future belong to you and that time is coming quicker than you think. Best wishes for the future.

Hair is a privilege not a right.

I went to hard ass boarding schools for 10 years and it did me the world of good. When you get out of school you can choose to have long hair.

Until then get over it. You will be out of school before you know it and while you may not be cool with short hair you'll probably have a job and people will respect you and not assume you're a bum or a shoplifter.

If you want I'll cut it for you for free. I've never cut hair before but hey I'm always interested in the personal development of our youth.

Smile, at least your olds want to send you to a good school.

Wise advice.... One day (not too far off either) you will be thankful for all these damn adults making you do all these things against your will.....
