I’ve a feeling that even those in ivory towers are travelling on a path – so let’s not exclude them from the journey, in our haste to arrive!

I tell you one thing for sure, dont do the hair thing for too long, its that simple, theres nothing sadder than a wannabe 40+ yr old rock star (and all that goes with it) with long hair that "nearly" made it, ive met sooo many losers like this in my time.
you've been watching saxondale havent you why do assume they are sad these losers? they can afford the best equipment available, and will undercut the young just to get a gig, dad bands rule buddy! hehe
anyway i find that view as plainly ageism pure and simple, that once you've reached 30, you are no longer capable of playing an instrument, even for enjoyment! coz thats what it is really all about in the end, and it is very cheap fun at times

SENIORS ROCK!

i agree with those say first be the man, and then when you're 40, bring it down from within - like merchant bankers do

and Lee thats right ther're all working for the council

Well Caleb, you've certainly stirred the pot with this one. Seems that everyone has an opinion, and quite rightly too. AND it's a Hell of a lot more interesting than the smoker/non smoker thread. Reading some of the posts though has made me wonder why no one has yet claimed that long hair rots your kidneys or sends you blind. There's an old saying - The difference between people with tatoos and the people without tatoos is that people with tatoos don't give people without tatoos a hard time about it. Cheers!

Yep, interesting thread isn't it?

It certainly has informed me about who I'd like to spend on obs night with - or a cloudy night. And Caleb is invited.

I must say I'm a bit amazed at the 'if you have long hair you must...' assertion. In the 70s when recent long hair fashions were only a decade old (look at Sir Isaac et al for older examples) you could explain the misconceptions as ignorance. How do you explain it 30+ years later? Slow learners??

I'm writing this while listening to Jan Akkerman's Aranjuez. Now who would have thought that some 'long hair' who plays electric guitar screamingly fast with all the FX would have the *discipline* to play classical guitar with an orchestra. You just can't judge a book by its cover, can you?

Caleb,
This is an age old problem.
The same people who will tell you don't judge a book by it's cover are judging you by your cover.
Don't give in!!!
The law says you must attend school up to a certain age so they
can't throw you out permanantly no matter what they threaten.

You must however be prepared to fight this bigotry for the rest of your life though because it does not stop when you leave school.

It can get you down at times.

It wont always be the length of your hair but it will always
be just as trivial and stupid.

Have confidence in yourself and always seek the company
of people that judge you by your deeds not your hair style.

Believe me anyone who is going to condem you on the basis
of the length of your hair are a waste of DNA.

I can't spell either, so what!!!

There's worse schools than yours. Its only hair long or short it don't matter.

At my school, if we didn't have appropriate uniform, shoes we had to go home and come back properly dressed!

Starting to feel like I'm back at school having an essay marked.

Do I need to start recalling some of my creative excuses for not
wearing my tie?

Hah! At my school we used to have to get up an hour before we went to bed and lick the parade ground clean, and if we didn't have a uniform, they used to kill us! (Monty Python, anyone?)

Have not had a hair cut since 1980 something, not about to start!!

Got a real job, employer is more interested in whether I can do
the job, hair length is irreleveant, does not affect my ability to
manage a computer network, or compile C code, or design and
implement a relational database, etc etc.

I am however aware that I am extreemly fortunate to have found
such an enlightened employer.
