My first attempt at Astrophotography

This is my first attempt at astrophotography.

I used an 8" dobsonian, camera bracket and Canon A530 compact digital camera. Unfortunately I accidently used 640x480 mode thus missing out on the resolution I intended to use.

Nahhhh,
You haven't got the focus quite right..............
Its suposed to be much blurrier and the exposure needs to be at least 4 stops up, so as to burn all the high lights out.
This is nothing at all like a first time image..............would you like some samples?...........I have hard drives full of them

cheers
John

Harb, you made me chuckle there.

The one thing I have come to realise is that the moon might be the only thing I can image with my Dob until I can afford to go with a tracking mount.

Has anyone had success on the planets with a Dob and a compact camera ?

Refer to the iceman, he seems to be the king of the "dob"ers....
He does some nice planetary stuff.
There are others here as well, that put out some amazing results..

cheers

Hi Rez

Great first attempt!

Thanks Harb Here's an article or 2 for you to digest, Rez, if you want to proceed down that slippery slope of astrophotography with a non-tracking dob

Astrophotography with a Dob

Planetary Imaging and Image Processing

Hope they help!

Nice one Rez. Looks a bit like mine from the night before, but you have achieved it on you first attempt with about a fifth of the cost! Good luck with your future shots.

Regards,
David.

Great first attempt at the moon Rez

You can get a reasonable picture of Jupiter with a Dob and camera clamped to the eyepiece holder. As an example, here is a link to one of my efforts at Jupiter and its moons from back in July 06

The answers is yes, there is heaps you can do with a non tracking dob. The trick is take video not single shots. Due to the variability of the focus cos of the atmosphere, you have to be very very lucky to get a single image that is fantastic.

Nowadays, we take video so we get lotsa images and then stack them to build the image.

Iceman's articles are great to start you off. It is a great way to get going as you learn heaps of great things. So that when you evetually spend that extra $,000's to get tracking, you are ready for high res planetary!
