Glad to see you've got some data David - I was wondering if you'd missed totality or not.

The workshop at NACAA mentioned aligning on the corona, rather than the moon - because the moon will move relative to the corona during the eclipse period. I wonder if the shadow/blurring around the lunar edge in your image is due to that? One processing recipe I was reading last night suggested superimposing a slightly larger moon over your merged image to take care of that movement.

how can you align on the corona when the shots are of differing exposures?

That looks good. I reckon you can extract the data. It's somewhere in there My shot needs a cloud removal tool which PS doesn't have yet.

I manually layered varying exposures in PS - nudged the layers about until the streams of the corona aligned.

Hi David,

Great shot!

You may be able to extract even more from your data using Fitsworks and perhaps avoid the onion rings. I used Fitswork on my ten raw images to generate the "Sunflower from Palm Cove" posting in this section however I was not able to capture the earthshine and I see that you have captured it very nicely. Was there anything special you did to "extract" the earthshine?

Thanks,

Mark J

Houghy,

IIRC, you're a PixInsight user, aren't you? PI has a LarsonSekanina filter process that looks like it might give good results. It's the same filter that does the magic in Fitsworks. I had a play with a stack of eclipse images last night in PI and the results were promising.

Cheers,
Rick.

Hi David
Nicely done. From what I can see between the two images, you should be able get a reasonable compromise between the two processing ends.

The last image was using only one run of data in stepped shots. The other shot was using everything - and that’s when the differing settings create the onion rings. This bit I have tried.

What I may end up doing is a hybrid of all data and then the processed range and adding them, one with out the corona and just the moon, to the better corona shot. As the camera was modded getting a better tonal range is also difficult - to capture the "actual colour”. I consider this to be really challenging and i fear way above my ability and pay grade
