Jupiter oct27UT in better seeing at last

Hi
the jetstream was minor and local seeing was fairly stable for over an hour - not perfect, but still quite nice conditions for a change for the ~30deg altitude. It was so stable that I felt confident enough to drop back to 30hz framerate to reduce the read noise.

This image is just a random sample - might be better images and I will need to play with processing a bit more on this one as well (its a tad noisy and overdone). However, wanted to post something immediate, since I will not have time to get onto this data in earnest for a few days.

The swirls around the GRS wake look very similar to those from last year and have a similar artificial look - however, this was how they showed up in the live feed. The dispersion corrector worked well and a lot of detail was visible even in the blue channel.

thanks for looking. Regards Ray

And a fantastic result it is Ray. I would say it equals birds image IMO. Congratulations & look forward to more.

BTW my E-cheque is yet to clear for the dispersion corrector but hopefully the unit will arrive before the end of this apparition..

A very fine result Ray, almost looks unaffected by the elevation. Maybe that is the power of the dispersion corrector.

The seeing on this side wasn't so good in the end, glad you took advantage of the conditions over there. Who knew pigs could fly ?.

thanks very much Asi - very pleased to finally get an image. I thought of posting the DC up to you to play with, since our seeing was so poor - glad I didn't..

the corrector certainly helped. I as hoping you had good conditions as well. yep, maybe pigs can fly after all...

thanks Matt. It's hard to accept that remodelling the garden is more important than image processing, but I am assured that is the case. more to come later

Nice Ray. I did wonder if the seeing was good last night. I am waiting until I am in Cairns to try for a Jupiter image. I will be there for 7 days and hope to get something on one night. Preferrably not the night before the eclipse. This is a nice result for the altitude. With any luck the seeing will improve and better results can be obtained by everyone.

thanks Paul. processing is still a bit messy (out of practice!), but the seeing was streets ahead of anything I have seen on Jupiter this apparition and it should look OK with a tidy up. good luck in Cairns - should be a lot better closer to the equator. Regards Ray

Yeah my thinking too on all counts. It should be around 63 degrees or so up there and no jet stream present, only local seeing is the factor. From memory seeing up there was pretty good at times, but then again I was not imaging at 12,000mm when I was last up there.

Hi Ray,
That is an amazing image, so well processed that doesn't look like having been captured with Jupiter having only 30deg of elevation.

Best Regards,

Fernando

PS:
I haven't used my Newt yet as the night sky here has been always closed. The weather forecast is saying that this weekend we will have some good night sky. Man, I am eager to test the scope after all those modds and adjustments.

thanks Fernando - that is the only time so far this year when the seeing has been OK down here. Looking forward to seeing what your new scope can do - as I guess you are as well. Regards Ray
