Flame and Horse Head

This is a true first light for the new camera, (a cooled and modded Canon 1100D), using the ED80.
It performed wonderfully, keeping to a pretty steady -14 all through the session.
A total of 3hrs and 45min of exposure time, using 5 minute subs.
It's mainly captured at ISO 400 with about an hour of ISO 800 thrown in. I'm still experimenting to find out which setting is best.
I had taken darks and used them initially, I found that they made no difference to the image so decided to process the image without them.
I did use flats though. You've gotta use flats.
Stacked in DSS and processed in CS3.

As the season progresses I'll be adding more data.

Outstanding image there J.

I'm afraid with summer here in the tropics, all I'm shooting are hot pixels with my non-cooled camera.

Saw your camera at Astrofest and loved the look of it. It's really turned out a great image in your hands. Well done JJJ and enjoy all it's potential.

Very nice shot jjj one to keep for sure, that cooled camera is very cool, now you have inspired me to think of a cooling mod for mine it can get hot and noisey at times.

Lovely!
I find with the QHY8 I rarely need darks either. Makes things easier.

That is a massive halo, any idea what is causing that? I kinda like it though.

That would be Alnitak causing the halo. It's a hot blue supergiant and the bane of anyone imaging the region. The little star right next to it is one of it's 2 companions.

Wow, looks very nice Out of curiosity, how did you end up choosing a cooled 1100D over an astro CCD?

I was looking into getting an OSC CCD but after doing a bit of research I figured that this camera could produce comparable images, with the added benefit of being able to utilise my existing camera lenses for wide field work.

Nice colour and smooth image. I would be suggesting it needs nothing more. Saturation is sensational
