Cumulonimbus with Lenticular cloud

Hi. Yesterday was the first time i have ever seen a Lenticular cloud(i think it is anyway) in person. Seen many in pictures and thought they only happened in other countries.
This one is sitting on top of a Cumulonimbus cloud. I was watching the high level cloud form as the towers of the Cumulonimbus cloud were growing and eventually they pushed upwards enough to form domes on top.

Nice shot !

The lenticular cloud forms over the cumulus the same way it can over mountain ranges-in this case the wind hits the cumulus and tumbles over the back- the air lift in this area is called `wave' and sometimes carries glider pilots to heights of 25,000 ft or more in Australia, at least this is my interpretation of what I am seeing here. The lenticular itself is more likely to be on the lee side of another group of cumulus and just happens to be colliding with this one.

Great photo Steve!

Was this in Adelaide? Funny, I've never seen this type of cloud locally, yet I have photographed it on Mars! Maybe I've got to stop grumbling about clouds and actually get out there and have a look at them.

Hi Ivan. Very sorry for the late reply. Yes, i photographed them south of Woodcroft. I have never seen them on Mars, would like to one day. I saw a nice one form as i was on my way to school pick up but didn't have my camera. Luckily some more formed when i got home I posted them the same day i photographed them

Thanks for the info. They formed reasonably quickly and would have made an awesome timelapse. Was good to watch them form and hope to see more

Very cool.
I did a timelapse of a Lenticular cloud over Mount Etna in Sicily a few years back. Will get around to assembling them into a video one of these days.
