You complain about Jet Streams - what about Smoke??

Over here in Perth, Jet Streams are the least of my worries. The last week has been largely ruined by smoke every night. Some from CALM burning off and some from residential wood fires now that it's got cold again.

Here I am, finally having masterred autoguiding in DEC not just RA, waiting to do a batch of 20 minute exposures with my ST7 to see what mag I can get down to, and all I get every night is smoke! Argh!

I've discoverred the green laser is a very good air quality indicator. I can often see where the layer of smoke stops and starts in altitutde.

LOL, yep its a green indicator! Log fires are a problem over here too, to the stage where Council is considering a ban on their use. Cant see that happening, the backlash will be severe from the punters with wood fires.

so that’s where all the smoke is from, set everything up last night to get some early morning observing came out and smoke was everywhere, hopefully CALM stop for the weekend if the weather holds off

Smoke, don't get me started. With a government and (mostly one) big business that are forestry mad in Tas, we have smoke almost 365 days a year. I'm sick of these idiots polluting the air and putting my health at risk, not to mention destroying the biodiversity of the state, all in the name of a fast (and third world dirty) buck. I travel around a lot and I can honestly say that I can't recall a single trip out of Launceston in the past 12 months when there wasn't a forestry burnoff occurring. People aren't allowed to smoke in pubs and clubs, even though we have a choice as to whether to go inside or not, yet out in the open air it's one long eucalypt cigarette. We also have the worst air pollution from wood heaters in the country, in a valley with temperature inversions that trap the smoke pollution. If big business has their way we'll also have a stinking pulp mill, which will spew air pollution in to the valley (as well as dump tons of toxic effluent into the ocean) and on to Launceston, fanned by the pravailing winds.

I hate logging and everything associated with logging including the waste of paper and wood that feeds the clearing of forrests. I didn't realise they burnt so continuousely, I'm surprised you can do any astronomy at all, must have to wait for winds blowing in the right direction!

There's so many things I hate about logging, you just added another reason to the list.
