Apple limit the data transfer to photos & certain cameras thru the iPad connector, what did you try plugging in?

Hi Warren,

Its probably just a clone generic Apple data cable, from the looks of it, it seems that its designed to "convert" a simple USB cable into some sort of Apple interface to connect it to say an IPOD or Gen 1 Ipad etc.

It seems that its simply there for people who may have misplaced their genuine apple data cable and use this to connect to a standard USB cable rather than shell out for a genuine one?

I dont think its any sort of USB peripheral interface or USB socket as such.

Chris

Woz - it looks like knock-off camera connection kit cable, but is probably the wrong one for your iPad. It may be for an older iPad, or even an old iPhone 3G/S. The software is telling you it isn't compatible with your iPad, that's all.

You can in fact plug some devices in the adapter. You can connect a powered USB hub or powered card reader. You can then connect external keyboards, memory sticks to the hub.
If you get a message the device is not supported, just dismiss it.

This isn't a universal fix, but sometimes works OK. My old 3GS used to complain about the video cable I bought for it, but dismissing the message did work in that case. The message is different if the phone or pad detects that the connected USB device draws too much juice.

I use the official apple one and can use my keyboard and my camera directly with the ipad, it seems to work okay.

Yes I know. Apple have not done enough in this field.

Thus the need for a powered hub.

I have the apple genuine cable and a non genuine USB cable. The genuine works, and the copy just gives errors.

That will probably answer your question.
