My 21st present telescope, help pls :D

Hi there all,

I would very much appreciate some advice! I am currently a uni student studying a B science maj in Phys and Stats (So obviously im poor starving uni student) but! my family have got together and said that they would all put some cash together so I can get an awesome telescope.

I've always wanted to get into astronomy and astrophotography. So i was wondering would the following telescope be a good choice for taking deep space images and for studying the spectra of stars:

http://www.bintel.com.au/Telescopes/...oductview.aspx

using:

http://www.rspec-astro.com/star-analyser/

and a Canon 50D with a T ring.

Also can anyone suggest some lenses that would go well with the telescope. I have a fair idea but its such a major decision and its one i don't want to rush! I have been looking for 9 months now and I think I've narrowed it down to this one... but that's why im here.

Thank you so much for your time!!!

James

What a lovely dilemma to have! I'll leave specific advice to others, as it's not my area of expertise by a long way. Gut feeling is that you could do some nice photography and spectroscopy with that set-up, but I'm sure others will help. One other thing to consider would be whether you want to have a budget for accessories, such as an eyepiece or two, in order to do some visual astronomy as well. Hope you get a nice scope!

Also keep in mind where you will be using it, ie how much travel time if any so the bulk of the setup becomes a consideration. You don't want something that is bulky and a pain to cart a long way if that's what you'll be doing and ends up sitting in your lounge room not getting used much.

As they say, your best scope is the one you use the most.

This is good advice. I got a 10" f 5.6 dob for my 21st (back in 1995!). The focal length was slightly too long for transport once I changed cars. Get something that you will have no trouble moving around, unless you have a permanent place to set it up.

You might wanna read the reviews on the LX80, while it would be fine for visual work i don't think its going to do very good AP. I was going to go the route my self and spent a lot of time chasing down info. There has being a ton of complaints and issues with LX800 which is there Big Gun, lol i hate to think about the LX80 after it. But please read the reviews, i do love meade though there latest saga has left me spiteful.

no.1 is you get what you pay for if the mount can move close to a g11's capacity why would you buy a g11?

Get a HEQ5 and a ED80, you will be better off IMO Some people may say a eq6 though trust me when you have to lug the thing around ya'll be peeved, i hate moving the heq5 but its gear ratio's, performance and steppers are the same as the eq6 with a lower load capacity. And hell if you wanna play with newt's later on, just sell ya heq5 off and get one or keep it for dark sites. Lol my wife just picked up a 12" skywatcher goto yesterday and i was thinking this won't be much more then the 10", well i must of being having a blonde moment, because there know way in hell i would lug it to the backyard on my own. Any person who does not own a perm ob and has a year or 2 behind them will tell you lugging heavy gear around is a real turn off and will often leave you loosing interest quickly. I thought it was all bs to start with, like yer i can move it so bah, well i don't know how many times myself and my wife have said I just can't be bothered bringing the scope out tonight.

I was in Bintel yesterday and asked about when the LX80 was due. All they could tell me was that they were due in January 2012!
A few of of the LX800's shipped in the US but they have all had to go back.
Unfortunately the LX80 and LX800 are vapourware at this stage, at least as far as Australia is concerned.
