Thumbs up SKA News - next generation Cray Cascade supercomputer to be installed in Perth

One of the engineering challenges of the SKA is that its computing requirements
exceed that which is available today.

Part of the jigsaw puzzle is about to fall in place with the Australian
government announcing yesterday the procurement of a 1.2 Petaflop Cray Cascade
supercomputer which will be installed at the Pawsey Center in Perth.

A Peta is 1 x 10 to the power of 15.

Cray describe the machine as their "Next Generation Supercomputer".

iVEC is an organization devoted to providing supercomuting capacity to
Western Australian researchers and is a joint venture between CSIRO and

The Cray Cascade will use a Linux software environment.

One exciting upshot of technologies such as the Xenon Phi is that it will
make its way into home computing. Gamers out there would no doubt salivate
at the prospect of co-processors providing multi teraflop performance with
their machines networked to others in the country via a 100Mb/s optical fiber.

Over the course of the SKA's life, it will be fascinating to watch the continued
pace of high performance computing technology and whether it will keep up
with the project's thirst for computing cycles and data storage.

Reminds me of the x87 co-processor days.
I think I still have a 8087 and 287, and maybe even a 387 floating around(oooo bad pun!) here somewhere.

LOL its x86 286 ect apart from the 8087 which was made. Well I can push about 36Gflops with my overclocked q6600, 138gflops can be had on a i7 2700K overclocked to 5.2ghz and thats about a mean average for the quickest current overlocked cpu's used in home computing. So yer 1.2 Pflops is dam fast hmm stacking a few million images would be seconds of work haha

Gary,

It will be interesting to see how they go just managing and transferring all that data, I recall the sheer volume was staggering even by total global standards.

Glad to see that MicroSoft is not the backbone OS !

Simon,

I am sure there are many of us who still have an original Zilog Z80 that predates the 8086 series.

Yep, I'm one of them.
For years I was trying to find a 4004
Worth too much now to spend any money on.
I think I have an 8008 tho.
My original comment was about co-processors which are a different beast.
