Women Smarter than Men

Although I think the human race is becoming progressively dumber, according to the researcher James Flynn (known for the Flynn effect), the average IQ for women now exceeds that of men.

For me it's not that surprising.

where did he say that the average women now score higher in IQ tests than the average men?

there was a time when I would have found that interesting and would have thrown such a theory into every macho's face.
nowadays, I simply don't mingle with machos anymore.
might be a sign for grown intelligence.

Make of it what ever you want.

The gap between men and women had become minimal and women scored marginally more than men in New Zealand, Estonia and Argentina
Women have overtaken men's IQ scores for the first time since testing began a century ago, according to a New Zealand expert on the subject who happens to be a man.
Emeritus Professor James Flynn, of Otago University, whose research on intelligence has gained international recognition, says women had lagged by as many as five points behind men in IQ testing.
But the gap has been narrowing in recent years and now women's scores are higher in some countries, including New Zealand, he is quoted as saying on various British media websites.
"In the last 100 years the IQ scores of both men and women have risen but women's have risen faster," he said.
"This is a consequence of modernity. The complexity of the modern world is making our brains adapt and raising our IQ."
One explanation is that women's lives have become more demanding as they multitask between raising a family and working outside the home.

Prof Flynn says the full effect of modernity on women is only just emerging and more research is needed to explain the trend.
He based his comments on IQ test results from countries in western Europe and from the US, Canada, New Zealand, Argentina and Estonia.
These showed the gap between men and women had become minimal and women scored marginally more than men in New Zealand, Estonia and Argentina.
In Australia male and female IQs were found to be almost identical.
Prof Flynn, who could not be contacted for further comment yesterday, is noted for his discovery of the "Flynn effect" - the year-on-year increase of IQ scores around the world.
The US-born academic, who stood unsuccessfully for parliament twice for the left-wing Alliance Party, also made headlines in New Zealand by saying the country risked having a less intelligent population after the 2006 census showed tertiary-educated women producing fewer babies than other women.

Not that surprising, really. Have you met the average Kiwi bloke?

(Just in case there is any doubt: this is a joke. I have friends from NZ.)

Sorry this is simply not true.

Men invented beer, football, pizzas and couches, so, I humbly beg to differ on the results of that research

That doesn't surprise me, at all. After all, women can multi-task better than men.

Often a survey is orientated to produce desired results. The statistics can be juggled to achieve a judgement that is beneficial in proving the researcher's concepts.

It is generally accepted that there are differences in male and female brains. Men are able to think more logically where as women have better language capabilities.

If tests are conducted with a greater portion of language orientated questioning then women will score better.

That's putting it simply. It is much more complex than that. Some people score average on word skills yet are near genius on spatial relationships.

Everyone has their strengths and weaknesses. My weakest scores are in language and communication. Two days of testing revealed that. It also showed where my strengths lay.

The complexity of IQ testing demands much more than just handing over a test and having the candidate answer questions.

People who grew up in country areas scored lower than their city counterparts. When the tests were redesigned to have less demand on comprehension and more on logic the country people scored better.

My point is the test results rely greatly on how well the candidates comprehend the test questions and what areas their strengths lay.

Types of testing are; language, scrambled words, arithmetic, codes, spatial relationships, progressive coding. There are several ways of testing and few people score equaly in each. That is because we all have varying aptitudes in different subjects.

Rambling switch is now off.

Cheers

Yes Trevor,

That is another variable. There are more, and whether these were taken into account is not known.

Cheers

My wife and I are a team. We both recognise there are differences which we applaud and similarities which we also applaud. Combined we are more formidable than any single person so it's a partnership that really works for us both.

She outguns me for business, marketing ad heaps of business skills and more. I outgun her in practical skills, IT knowledge, navigation. etc etc.
Works for us. Differnt brains working diffeent ways.

I don't really beleive IQ is the real measure of abilty, it is only one perspective. I know many people who would score poorly on an IQ yet they can still excell and beat me at certain skilled tasks. It's as much about aptitude and attitude I reckon.

Each to their own I guess and viva la partnerships !!

Person of the Century

Of the 100 chosen, Albert Einstein was chosen the Person of the Century, on the grounds that he was the preeminent scientist in a century dominated by science. The editors of Time believed the 20th century "will be remembered foremost for its science and technology", and Einstein "serves as a symbol of all the scientists—such as Heisenberg, Bohr, Richard Feynman, ...who built upon his work".[1]
The cover of the magazine featured the famous image of Einstein taken in 1947 by American portrait photographer Philippe Halsman.

Maybe the next one will be a woman

Personally I think Emmy Noether is head and shoulders above everyone else.
Yet sadly largely unknown.
The mathematics behind particle physics which includes the theory behind the Higgs boson stems from her work.

How interesting - Warwick and I are the exact opposite. I can do maintenance on the car, pull a computer apart and build it up again etc, he's hopeless at these skills. Yet he's good at marketing (when he puts his mind to it). I'm the navigator though, he gets lost. And I do mos of the household maintenance jobs, he's downright dangerous with a hammer.

Interestingly, I grew up on a farm, he's a city boy.

Of course most women are smarter than most men they need to be otherwise the men would not get caught.

Intellegence is often confused with learning.

And another "largely unknown" - killed for her intelligence.

She was mentioned by Carl Sagan in his Cosmos series (and book), and her life as an astronomer and mathematician make facinating reading. Ahead of her time and murdered because of it. Known as Hypatia of Alexandria, hers is an amazing story.

I have 3 daughters (unfortunately did not have any sons to play footy with) all smart all have uni degrees----as a dad women can do anything they put their minds to---good at multi-tasking. But having said that us guys are single minded----kind of solving the big singular problems of the universe and all of that stuff---what do you reckon ????? only going of history.

cheers

If my memory serves me correctly women invented air bags, fire escapes and windscreen wipers, and the stuff on the above list was handy in keeping the blokes busy while they did so.
