Did anyone see bright stars before sunset with naked eye ?

I am curious. Once (Canberra, Mar 1986) I saw Sirius in late afternoon with Sun well above horizon when looking along the scope I saw Sirius with the NAKED EYE. Two years later I saw Canopus just before sunset with naked eye as well.

Later I did not see them (and not try) anymore. Did anybody have experience with seeing bright stars before sunset with naked eye ?
