First Images from Hawaii

Well I managed to get a shot of the summit of Mauna Kea from my hotel. There appears to be a bit of cloud there but I am asssured it is actally quite low. I could see the Subaru dome a couple of times but didn't manage a shot!

Also attached are a couple of shots of the pool area etc at the hotel. No complaints about Snake Valley, but it is a nice way to run an astro camp!!

Yes it's cheaper to SV Erik, but at least frost isn't an issue in Hawaii.

Looks idyllic Malcolm.

I believe they are diverting the creek at Lostock to create a similar pool area complex
in time for the astrocamp this year. The cows will keep the lawns similarly manicured.

Malcolm, a friend of mine, Stephen Ramsden, is conducting Solar Outreach on top of Mauna Kea for the Transit. If you can , get up there and join in the fun. He'll supply the Eclipse Glasses and solar telescopes.
He's up there Monday through to Wednesday.

I am with an organsied group, but I will keep an eye out for Stephen.

Hopefully will have some good reports by tomorrow night ( it is Tuesday night here)
My imaging gear is all working OK, as long as the operator keeps his wits about hime.
The main problem is they are predicting 100kph+ winds for the summit so we may only go up there to have alook at the Keck and do most of the observing from lower down.

You call that wind! Today >110 kph gusts today on the south coast and 100 kph gusts at Sydney airport!
