Having just purchased Mikes Sigma 17 - 70 lens I thought I would give it a run tonight.
Image is of Southern Cross and pointers using 7 steps of defocus to shown the colours.
Be kind as I am very new at this.
Thanks Bob
I suddenly heard Franknfurter singing "Lets do the time warp again" when I first looked at the image. The defocus technique has been around for a while now (I remember seeing a David Malin shot years ago using the technique) but I don't recall seeing it used so effectively in a widefield shot before. Really interesting effect Bob, I like it a lot. It works in well with the lens curvature.

In the best spirit of "somewhere, someone on the Internet is wrong", you should know that Riff-Raff is the male voice in "time warp" and Franky only appears at the end.
There- I fixed the Internet...
Cheers,
Andrew.
In my excitement to fix the Internet I completely forgot to address the topic! Roger Groom has posted some lovely wide field shots using a very similar technique, www.rogergroom.com
It's a matter of taste, personally I prefer tightly focussed stars.
Cheers,
Andrew.
