Silent Moments

Mount Cook in post sunset glow approximately 30 km to the North.

I waited to capture this scene for 2 days and while the light lived up to my expectations, the clouds, however, had other ideas. You win some, you lose some, I guess.

Typically, in my captures, I blur the movement of water with longer exposures, but, to try and compensate for the lack of brilliant colour in the clouds, I thought I would freeze the movement in the water with a relatively short exposure and try for some dynamism.

Moments after capturing this image, the orange blaze disappeared and the bank of cloud from the west rolled in to blanket the scene and dropped a fresh dusting of snow.

I made this image while standing in the Tasman River on a freezing cold evening. When I started driving back to camp, the thermometer in the car read -7 degrees.

Canon EOS 5D Mark II, Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM
1/4s f/5.0 at 50.0mm iso200

Large version available here.

The 5D Mark II is still an unbelievable imaging machine.

Comments, critique, etc., most welcome.

Thank you, David.

I'm heading back in July for a cold winter campaign.

I intend to shoot mainly 120 film, but, if I'm able, I'll also capture some digital images.

Just beautiful H. I'm assuming you had the tripod in the drink too shooting at 1/4 sec?

Thank you, Rob.

Yep, I have a small Manfrotto travel tripod which has gone around the world with me. It's been in boggy marshes, rivers, sand, and streams quite a few times. Coming up, snow!

Certainly looks cold. Lovely shot. Shame about the conditions, but if anyone can squeeze something out of it, it's you! And there's the proof.

Thanks, Chris.

I think the image you're referring to is Mystic Dawn. I've made a few 30x20" prints of this one and the detail is just gobsmackingly gorgeous. Not bad for a cheapie lens.

Troy,

You're too kind.

I'm actually really happy with the way the water has come out in this one. The movement is spectacular.

Rolf,

Cheers! I agree, re: movement.

I'll be back in July for some more goodness. See if I can't get myself killed in a snowstorm doing what I love most.

Chris,

I'm not sure which other lake one you were referring to.

I'll send you a link to some images.
