Question Promoting more and varied discussions

Was chatting with Geoff (starkler) yesterday, and we were commenting that lately, 80+% of the discussions have been about equipment, what to buy, where to buy, etc.

That's great, of course.. more people buying equipment is more people entering this great hobby. I'm much more keen that we talk about equipment if it means new people entering the hobby buy a decent telescope and not one that they'll be disappointed with, can't find anything with, and put it in the cupboard never to be used again.

On the flip side, we have a lot of members who are experienced observers, who already own scopes and have for a long time, and probably aren't particularly interested in participating in discussions about new equipment.

So, let's try and encourage some more threads and discussions to suit the other half.. to maybe encourage participation from those quiet members who aren't posting.

Let's use the "Space and Astronomy Talk" forum more.. talk about everything space and astronomy, including:
  • Observing reports
  • Discussions about particular objects, DSO's etc
  • Discussions about favourite objects
  • Discussions about observing techniques, tips etc
  • Discussions about the science of astronomy
  • Discussions about space missions, etc

And anything else I've missed

Let's get some intelligent and stimulating discussions going to cater for the needs of all of our members! And for the new people to the hobby, it'll help to educate them and give them the opportunity to learn more in a shorter time.

Thanks!

I agree Mike,

I would like to hear more on what people are doing with there scopes

More than just talking about which one maybe better or worse
you can only discuss eyepieces for so long

The Image and Photography section gets plenty of use.
That is good.

Would like to see a observation section for people to report there observations. Also to alert people on what is comeing up, say comets, meteors etc.

My thoughts and I will report if people like in detail on what we observe with our scopes. Next targets for the 18" is some Abell Clusters of Galaxy's.

Hey Dave. all observation reports and upcoming events etc, can (and should) be posted in the Space & Astronomy Talk section.

I'd love to read your observing reports of those monster scoeps you view through.

Thanks to Stuart and some others for getting the ball rolling, keep it going guys let's talk about more than just what to buy from where.

I would love to see something like dave mentioned.....a detailed alert of upcoming events....

Maybe we can also have an objective regarding those astrophotographers.....something nominated for the month for everyone to capture and compare results.....

I also want a get together once a year organised...probable held somewhere in NSW to be organised.

Hmmm...what else do I want....give me time.....lol

P.S....My Birthday is coming up in 3 weeks....so I have a registry going at Myers......under Striker....hehe

I would like a good set of Binoculars with image stabilisers.

Maybe after I finish the Blackwood observatory I will write up a treatise on why I took that actions I did and give a detailed report on how to undertake a construction project like this. I want to help those that are not construction orientated and that would not normally consider an undertaking of this nature. What do you think Mike, worth the effort or not?

I will definitely get my review of the Super wedge for the Meade done soon, and when I get first real light on the 80mm ED I will do a review of that too.

Maybe some thread discussions on celestial mechanics or quantum physics would be good?

Great Idea Mike
I am predominatly a visual observer & it is the experiences I have while observing that are the biggest thrill
Star hopping around & finding a Dozen new messiers object in a night, watching the dance of the moons around Jupiter or galaxy hopping through Virgo.
I would love to hear others experiences too.
