Targeted online ads

I see how it works now. I must have clicked on one of the ads on the right there - in fact I know I did. Now when I'm surfing random sites I get ads for OzScopes. And that's even without having any Google memberships.

I bet supermarkets would love to be able to cross reference my credit card details and IP address to advertise things I'd purchased in the past.

Wait for it...

Sneaky .. aren't they....!!

I have a nice app' ( browser addon ) that detects website ' trackers ' and makes me ' invisible ' to them.... It actually ' cancels ' their ability to track me.

Note ... not all Websites harbor ' trackers '.

Your browser ' can ' give a lot of info out about what ' sites ' you have visited.

At the moment ... it is blocking ( 2 ) trackers on this site. (
Google Adsense and Google Custom Search Engine. )

Ooops, I better stop looking up porn then

Flash, what are the browser addon your using?

I have noticed lately that adds are being embedded in the ABC news. It only shows the add if you click on the highlighted text though. It's still is annoying and insidious to see the blue highlighted text as you can't work out if it is hypertext to another article, until you click on it.

Cheers Pete

Hi Tim

That's not how it works, it's nothing to do with Google memberships or clicking on ads on the right.

The Google 'adsense ads' work by analysing the site you're reading and the text on the page (what the page/article/news story) is about, and then displaying 'relevant' ads.

So, it figures out what type site you're looking at, and displays ads based on what it thinks you might like.

Visit an astronomy site, and Google will display astronomy ads. OzScopes advertise via Google Adsense on other sites on the internet, so that's why you would've seen their ad.

So... if I had Gmail and You Tube accounts I'd see even more ads? Yipes!

Its quite interesting what ads pop up. I get Ozscopes ads all the time on various websites (even on my computer at work!! hmmm must stop browing IIS on the boss's time)
When I was looking at a trip to Hawaii in June, and did a few price checks on Webjet and Flight centre for flights from Melbourne to Kona and I keep getting pop up ads in IIS and other sites asking if I am looking for a flight to Kona?

Using Chrome browser, the addon/extension that stops tracking is "Do Not Track Plus version 2.0.9"

Cheers
