Please help with identifing this worm? hole

Earlier today I was watering the plants and noticed this hole. I have seen holes like this before many years ago, but not recently.
But now with the power of the IIS Community, I was wondering if someone could identify the creature within
Its about 20mm diameter and after poking a stick into it as far as I could, about 70mm deep ( but I think it took a "rght turn Clyde" direction), and I think it could be deeper....
Its in a pot, not off the ground (pavers) and the plant is a rose. On some of the pics you can see little mounds of dirt...????

Any ideas????
Cheers

hole

Some species of ground wasp dig a chamber for the lava and then return with paralysed food for them..
Ground digger wasps or cicada killer wasps dig finger sized burrows with a spoils mound near the entrance.
There was a chapter in the last Michael Crichton thriller involving humans shrunk to millimetres Vs hungry 'giant' wasp in burrows. It must have affected me more than I thought else I would have never remembered this little nugget!

Is there any sign of webbing at the entrance? It could be a couple of things, a wasp or a spider. I'd say a wasp though by the looks of the debris around the mouth of the tunnel.

Thanks Paul, no webbing though.....its a perfect tunnel......so I guess a wasp.....must be a big wasp?!?!?!?
And thanks Graham too.....I remember a TV series where the people were stranded on a giant world like their own....what was it called ??????????????
