time to get out your chemistry sets

An accidental discovery by a 5th grade student. Pretty cool, esp as she now has a joint authorship in a scientific paper

Wow, that is a cool story. At least the teacher took her serious enough to find out about it.

The chemistry sets they sell now are a far cry from the ones I had as a kid, they are almost chemical free!?!

Brilliant achievement, I wish my children would take on this type of enthusiasm as well.

The article doesn't say if clara knew what she was doing or if she just clicked bits together willy-nilly.

I'd be interested to know if she actually thought it through and worked it out, or if it is pure accidental mucking about.

One method may make a scientist, the other may make a fleeting interest in science.
I really hope she thought it through and meant to do it

When I did Chemistry it is quite plain that even if it was a click together, the basic principle of Carbon-Carbon bond in organic chemistry is required to at least form some usable structure. For a 10yo girl this is an amazing achievement.

I think the key is it has excited the girl into pursuing science which is well done.

It may well be accidental, not too dissimilar to other discoveries (the structure of benzene was dreamt up, literally). Just hope she keeps up her curiosity in science.
PS when is the Feb club meeting?

Sigh, I thought so, have to give it a miss. My son is turning 6 and we planned his party that Sat (alternatively I can bring 20 kids to Snake Valley ).
Will be there for the March camp though, even if it rains
Can't get flash on the iPad, hence the obvious question.
