Where To Buy Maple Ply In Sydney

Hi there,
I am about to build my-self a longboard and i've got everything but the wood, all i am looking for are 2 1/4 inch sheets of Maple Ply in 10Inch x 40Inch. I cannot find anywhere in sydney that sells this, i have called up pretty much all the stores and they have said "Well, we have plywood with a maple veneer" but i dont want that i want the maple plywood. So if anyone could tell me ASAP where the nearest place to get A sheet of maple plywood in sydney is, that'd be great.

Thanks, Nick

Nick,

Mate, I'd be surprised if anyone carries Maple in the dimensions you need.

A number of years ago I ventured in to making drum shells (a long story for a guitarist that can't play drums ) and as the majority of "known brand" shells are Maple I sussed out most suppliers of Maple (veneers/ply) in Aust. Most comes in as 0.6mm, however there was also a thicker (but lower grade) which was used for making skateboard decks.

If I was looking to do what you're planning, I would be using the 0.6mm veneer and making my own ply. For a 6mm thick ply I'd cut 10 pieces of 0.6mm BUT make sure at least 1/3 were cut across the grain, then I'd glue them together using TechnoGlue (epoxy) in a vacuum bag setup.

Time consuming but the only way I know of getting what you require.

Is this for aesthetics or stabilty ?
There are plenty of other good high quality plies that will do the job just as well.
If you are worried about stabilty buy good ply but get something a wee bit thicker and use plenty of screws and glue during construction.
If it's just for aesthetics find something you like and in that case the maple veneered plywood will do the job very nicely. ( And is probably quite stable anyway )
