Heads up... CH7 Now - New Battle of Britain Doco

It's been a while since anything new has come along on this subject. Respected British actor David Jason hosts a new documentary which commemorates the events' 70th anniversary. Should be great.

Very well presented so far. Refreshing to see completely new footage and real Spitfires in the first person.

Thanks for the heads up Chris. I will be sure to watch that. The last think I watch was a film called First Light, which was quite good.

Cheers Peter

Thanks for the heads up. Also good to see it from the perspective of the ground crew who kept the planes maintained and air-worthy

Yep - good show, well done. No tantantarra Foxtel-style BS urgency and dramatic music. Calmly delivered and informative. Nothing new in terms of previously undisclosed information or anything, but a top show nonetheless.

It was great. Wonderful footage but hard to get my head around the fact that a pilots life expectancy was just a few hours. Frightening.

Hi Chris & All,

Thanks mate -- much enjoyed. The course of history changed there. Had the British not succeeded in defending against the Germans right there, the world might be a very different place today. Beside being a deadly weapon in the right hands, the Spitfire is just drop-dead gorgeous. Beautiful piece of machinery. The Hurricanes were just as important to the overall scheme, but the Spitfires are just beautiful things.

Best,

Les D

A song about Spitfires, like, only they could do.

What a way to start a concert. If only I could have been there.

Get your patriotism on.

"We shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be. We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender!" --Winston Churchill

There goes the siren that warns of the air raid
Then comes the sound of the guns sending flak
Out for the scramble we've got to get airborne
Got to get up for the coming attack.

Jump in the cockpit and start up the engines
Remove all the wheelblocks
there's no time to waste
Gathering speed as we head down the runway
Gotta get airborne before it's too late

Running, scrambling, flying
Rolling, turning, diving, going in again
Run, live to fly, fly to live, do or die
Won't you run, live to fly,
fly to live, Aces high.

Move in to fire at the mainstream of bombers
Let off a sharp burst and then turn away
Roll over, spin round to come in behind them
Move to their blindsides and firing again

Bandits at 8 o'clock move in behind us
Ten ME-109's out of the Sun
Ascending and turning our Spitfires to face them
Heading straight for them I press down my guns.

Rolling, turning, diving
Rolling, turning, diving going in again
Rolling, turning, diving
Rolling, turning, diving
Run, live to fly, fly to live, do or die
Won't you run, live to fly , fly to live, Aces high.

The Hurricanes were a better machine. Get shot up, land, patch it with Irish linen, back in the air. The Spitfire, being all metal, had to go to the shop to get fixed. At least that is what a good friend of mine (now deceased) said, as he flew Hurricanes during the Battle for Britain.

But, I agree, the Spitfire is a beautiful looking machine.
RIP Peter, long gone, but definitely not forgotten!
