Hi Jason,
+ 1 here for Astronomy Australia 2012. Not only does it give you a month by month guide to upcoming events, it also has maps, planet & moon rise and set times for each state in Australia, meteor showers, listing of deep sky objects, bright and nearest stars, astro clubs, etc etc etc. It's a very useful resource.
This year there is a special section on double star observing for beginners- I'm very excited about that one.
You can buy this book from bookstores, I just got mine on the weekend from QBD $27, and
Bintel sells them for $25.
They are also normally available here through Mike (iceman); I don't know about stock levels though, just send him a pm if you're interested.
My next suggestion would be to have a look at this great website. It give a month by month guide on what's happening and what to look at.

Lastly, visit the Astronomical & Celestial Events forum on here, that's where most of the upcoming news is posted.
Enjoy!
