Comet Lovejoy 1 and Darwin 0 .
We missed it ! but thanks to all who posted a cool array of photos . from NZ .. .
I tried every morning here before work and .. no .
We might get ol' Lovejoy on her/his, return run ?
Brian.
I got up at 5.15 on Wednesday morning to try and catch a look and had clear skies. Unfortunately when I got to a relatively dark and flat site there was too much light from the sun on the horizon to see anything other than bright stars; even with my binoculars. Of course the next morning was cloudy so I've accepted that this one's gotten away. I'm not even sure we can see it from up here anyway.
The bad news is that this comet is quickly fading and won't be back for a very long time (800 years approx).
The good news is that it could be the start of another cluster of brighter Kreutz sungrazing comets. There was a bright cluster that appeared 1880-1887, and another 1963-1970. So perhaps there is another 1 or 2 (or more) of these comets in the next decade or so. Lets hope
wouldnt that be nice ! Terry .
lets hope they start around may/june after the wet season has passed . .
