Apollo moon camera

There's a free talk this Thursday night (7pm) at the National Museum of Oz called "Apollo TV from the Moon".

It's being presented by Stan Lebar who was program manager from the team which invented the Apollo Moon cameras.

There'll also be screened special footage from the Apollo XI moon landing as it was seen at Honeysuckle Creek station.

This footage is higher quality with more detail than was shown on the official NASA broadcast and has only recently been rediscovered because of the dedicated efforts of some of the ex-Honeysuckle and other Apollo-era staff.

Should be cool.

Sounds great, its a pity that distance is a problem to get to that one. Any way it can be videotaped and burnt to DVD?

No worries lads. I'll definitely keep you posted.

A DVD/video's being worked on as we speak and all I can say for the time being is it'll be available by written request.

I'm told the footage is very good.

Houghy. That's spooky. (Spooky Houghy) I was just going to post some more about this.

I'm told the footage is the original material as gathered by the team working at the then facility at Honeysuckle Creek. It's apparently much higher quaility than the images broadcast at the time and subsequently dug out of TV archives and shown over and over again.

If I've got this right, the images at the time suffered greatly from being relayed from place to place (compresseion etc) and the original footge shot by the camera was in a more sophisticated form than the TVs (cameras, monitor and TV sets) were capapble of replaying without all the ghosting and grain we've come to associate with the moon landing and other Apollo footage. Something to do with the astro camera's higher frame rate etc

Anyway, it looks better. Much better. Also, I'm lead to believe there's a fair amount of previously unseen footage. Unseen even by NASA, up until now.

For us astronuts... kind of like finding old Beatles recordings tucked away in the bottom of the cupboard!

Stay tuned. More details as they come to hand. This is your Canberra correspondant signing off .... back to you ... Mr Cronkite

Update .... update .... update....

The DVD has been put together and is on its way to me.

Thanks very much to the good folk at the Deep Space Centre at Tidbinbilla and members of the original staff at Honeysuckle Creek.

Should have an address soon for you to write to if you'd like to get your own copy of this fantastic, historic material.

G'day Matt,

This is awesome news indeed. The Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium would like to get a copy of the DVD so when the address becomes available it would be wonderful if you could supply me with that contact.

Peter.

Please please matt.. I would love a copy of this. I hope there is no legal ho ha about copyright and all. In my opinion its public historic property. How about maybe geting the finders to but it up as a torrent or other mass downloadable format.

Regards

As mentioned before, at this stage the material's only available on a per person written basis.

I'll make inquiries and see if there's any plan to make it available in a form other than DVD/video ie download.

I'm hoping my preview DVD will arrive today. We had a public holiday here in the ACT yesterday so hopefully the postie's got something very special for me today?

Stay tuned .... lunar-tics!!!!
