Lovejoy from the deep south.....Dec 24th

My effort from the morning of 24/12/11, Lovejoy backed by Launceston city and the Tamar River. Not much PP other than sharpening and upping the contrast and saturation a little in DPP.
I suspect that the extended twilight compared to the north island makes the shot more blue than the others I've seen.

5DII, 16-35L @ 2.8 30 seconds.

Thanks Carl, and You're right Andrew, love the 5DII, less than impressed with the 16-35.

We're lucky with the view, I didn't have to travel, happened to wake just after 3, fell out of bed, 3 steps out on to the deck and snapped away still half asleep.

@ Paul, HRH insisted that I get out and take a photo, she even came out for a look, although the night sky comes a poor second to her beauty sleep.

Dave, the light pollution isn't quite as bad as it looks, the nearest of those lights is over 4Km's away, the city area under the comet is 10K's, the worst problem is that I have street lights on the opposite side of the house.

Nicely done! I like the composition - we haven't seen many photos with city lights in them on here

Very nice Phil, the tree in the foreground adds some colour, well composed.

Thanks Dave & Lester, I'm still puzzling over how the trees in the foreground were illuminated, perhaps some light from the nearby streetlights.

Actually I looked again and it was from the nearby streetlight.
