Close encounters

Yesterday was another busy day out in the valley. The emus tried to move away, so I squatted down to look smaller than them and imitated their chest-boom. That got their attention and they both advanced to see what I was all about.

I sat on both ends of a 20 metre section of creek to get a shot of my venomous little friend here, the Platypus. The first time he popped up, I was just taking my hat off when he surfaced not two feet from me where I was squatted at water level. I froze, slowly lowered my hat to my knee in preparation to raise the camera when my hat slipped from my grip and dropped about four inches. That was it - one vanished Platypus. I swapped to the other end for a while then relocated to some reeds in the middle of the pool. Eventually patience paid off and I got the shot I was after.

Do you know how far I have driven and walked looking for Wedge-Tailed Eagles?! On my way out to the valley, this one was flying around near the road. On with the brakes, out with the camera and got a few opportunistic shots while it was circling above.

The Rhino beetle was skulking around my front door last night while I was waiting for the lunar eclipse.
I took a quick bit of video of it with my phone camera as it was making some interesting chirping noises.
