Im looking to buy a mount for my refractor. (5inch f7) At the moment Im finding it very frustrating when I try to focus I get some vibrations at the EP. Dont get me wrong I understand that my scope can go onto a massive mount and still have that problem, Im just looking to reduce it. The scope is mounted to an eq6 pro presently. Any suggestions???
Your problems might be coming from the tripod Peter. The legs tend to be loose fitting at the hub which can allow movement and in any case, the tripod is a little prone to vibration with a heavy load. The Losmandy G11 HD tripod is rock solid by comparison.
My 130EDT F8 used to be on a SPDX and it was Ok for visual, except in strong winds. Now that its on the EQ6 it is rock solid anytime. It is though, mounted on a tension leg portable pier which provides a very firm base.
My set up weighs 12kg with cradle, eyepiece and finder.
Hi Peter. Agree with Tony and John, EQ6 should probably do the job OK. As suggested, check the tripod first - might be able to stiffen it up or replace. Otherwise, if it suits your viewing routine, maybe consider a mobile pier mount, or even a fixed pier.
The other thing to check, if you haven't already done so, is to make sure that the drives on the mount don't have excessive backlash and that the screws that hold the mounting puck on the top of the mount are tight - any play anywhere can upset stability with a heavy load. Regards Ray
I've have an EQ6 & tripod and no complaints - even with a TOA130 or an Intes 815D (3 metre FL) I get no vibration.
Could be the scope's balance or something loose in the focuser (?).
Worth a check before spending more cash.
I think nothing beats a pier with a good solid lump of concrete stuck in the ground! When your struggling to get up from an awkward viewing position you can pull yourself up on the pier too! Not good for portability though Over the years I have left a sting of properties with a handy base for an out door table.
