Two USGS reports from today:
6.0 at 14:20 NZST and 5.2 at 13:00 NZST
Christchurch Earthquake Map has 16 quakes over mag 2 so far today.

Any reports from NZ members?

Nothing was felt down where I live, but then we didn't feel the most damaging quake back in February either. The September 4th shake - the 7.1 - gave us a bit of a ride though.

Interestingly enough, my two cats went crazy a few hours before each of these larger quakes including today's, and I have the email evidence to prove it!

Last night, I sent tongue-in-cheek warnings to people, telling them that my cats had predicted another earthquake and, as expected, a torrent of abuse was the response.

Well, who is laughing now, eh?

Quite a lot did move, and with today's quakes lots more are now saying they are moving too.

News clips showed people saying they are scared to go inside their workplaces and even their own homes. They have plainly had enough.

This from some of my family who live there, on facebook today.

"another day of earthquakes, a 5.5 followed by a 6, and since 9 smaller aftershocks from 3.5 to 4.5. I am well and truly over it."

Hopefully it settles down soon. There does seem to be an unusual amount of aftershocks. And they really need to consider not to rebuild on the areas that are prone to liquefaction.

Are you moving to CHCH, H? Or will it be some other place on the South Island?

On TV last night Mayor Bob Parker was saying they were evaluating the wisdom of rebuilding in some areas. At least no one has been killed but it must be so traumatic. There won't be bugger all left of old Christchurch soon. Shame, it was a pretty city with the cathedral and older buildings.

I'm currently looking for sysadmin work in the major capitals.

The eventual goal is to move towards Wanaka/Queenstown as they're the main hubs for what I want to do.

I arrived in Auckland when I immigrated here and have never left - found it to be a great base with lots of opportunities. I now live in the Waitakeres which is a mountainous native forest area west of Auckland - with surprisingly dark skies even . I enjoy the beaches and the climate up here, so I prefer to only visit the South, but yeah it's absolutely spectacular down there, can't wait to go again sometime soon.
