"planking"

"A young man is in a coma after falling from a moving car while 'planking', just days after another man died partaking in the stunt."

Sam Newman was on Current Affair doing "planking" on some balcony of a high rise building. Even prime minister spoke about it on TV.

Why do people do this? Adrenaline rush? Want to be on news?

Because this kind of trash makes the major media outlets.

If it wasn't reported, no-one would be doing it.

Yep sure:

..........the Channel 9 chopper just happened to by flying by, 90 The River Esplanade in Docklands ( I know the location well as Sam has an apartment above ours) with a video crew, and very long lens.

...and shock horror !! Here was Sam, flat out on his balcony. What a scoop!

As P.T. Barnum (of Barnum and Bailey's Circus) was fond of saying: "no-one ever lost a dollar by underestimating the intelligence of the general public"

Barnum was also fond of saying "there is a sucker born every minute"

My cousin showed me a picture of him "planking" at his work last week. It's all the rage at the moment but wont last long as all these "viral" type lunacies tend to have short life spans before the next idiotic craze is picked up.

I understand Sam Newman had the TV crews there because he had earlier told a radio station or something he was going to do it. This was all before that first poor fellow died.

I'm not a fan of "planking", but from my point of view I see it as just a bit of fun. It's just people lying down in funny situations that you wouldn't expect. It's humour, not everyone's cup of tea, but it's humour. But the thing is it's like anything in life that people do, there is always going to be some idiot who takes it too far and ends up getting hurt, or in the extreme case we have seen, killed. But it doesn't mean everyone who does "planking" is going to do the same or are just as stupid.

Unfortunatley however it seems the media beatup has done it's job and people now seem to have this idea in their head that "planking" equals lying down in extremely dangerous situations period. Therefore anyone who does it is automatically judged an idiot. Charming. But that's the job of the media, highlight the extreme minority for the sake of a good story. And how fortudious that it originated from the Internet, because we all know nothing good ever comes from the Internet.

This is very tragic stuff for a these young fellas loved ones in regard to this lame arsed nonsence.

Though if Sam happened to take a tumble past my kitchen window one morning Pete, I coudn't help but feel pity for the concrete below having to put up with him up close and personal until the hoses had done there job .

It might have started as harmless fun, but add grog, drugs and a healthy dose of testosterone / adolescent bravado and the tragic results were inevitable.

People kill themselves in all sorts of innovative ways ( I am a big fan of the Darwin awards), and slowly but surely because of this, we are being bubble wrapped by the nanny state of Oz.

What ever happened to personal responsibility?

It is the low level of journalism that just helps the process along. Channel 9's coverage with the "shock & outrage" was truly pathetic.

Real risks are rarely looked at...so long as the tabloid headline get's 'em in

Planking I'm sure can be a bit of fun. Let's hope the bureaucrats don't put in the same bin as those "weapons of mass murder".....laser pointers.

Just like Phooning. That's been going on for years but no one died so no media mock outrage.

This seems to be a harmless bit of silliness.
If yer daft enought to try "extreme" planking (I just made that up so...dibs! ), you'd probably be equally likely to die in some other stupid way.
Its cold, its wet, its dull - McJournalists like 'Today Tonight" are going to grasp anything they think will whip-up interest.

Darwin Awards 2011

"Man run over by train while planking between the lines"
"Women suffocates as bottom run in planking totem"

this pass time I suppose is no different than wheelie bin riding or
train surfing

or any other stupid jack ass idea the young can come up with for fun

once the media looses interest so will everyone else

Maybe instead they should take up a sport to pass the time... such as Extreme Ironing!
Check it out here, it's hilarious: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extreme_ironing

Picture this. Lying on your back in the grass on a sunny beautiful day in a park looking at the blue sky. Then for some reason you roll over to grab a drink from your picnic bag....

Ranger passing by: "Sorry mate! No planking here. I'm going to have to issue a fine!"
