Celestron CGEM: some initial thoughts...

Picked up my Celestron CGEM mount from Bintel in Melbourne this afternoon. Thought I would post some initial thoughts on the mount...I havent even turned it on yet

Firstly both the mount head and tripod are well packed. The counter weight was packed with the tripod, but had its own packaging totally isolated from tripod.

Fit and finish are good - I actually wasn't really expecting it to be that
good - reports Ive read seem to indicate that it was at the same level as the EQ6, but I would put it ahead of that mount in external built quality. I much prefer the black and orange trim, to the all white look of the EQ6. (very minor thing I know)

Its no G11, but I can manage

To my delight, both axis are silky smooth, and show no signs of looseness or potential backlash causing issues. (but I wont know for sure until I fire it up) The tripod legs are very solid, and at just the right level of tightness to the mounting area - (My other two mounts, EQ5, and two HEQ5's had rather loose mountings)

As others have mentioned, the hand controller cord is stupidly short. You have to wonder what goes through the minds of Celestron for that design descision

My only real issue is that I need additional counter weights, because the Meade 12inch is too manly. Im using an additional one from the old CG5, but its still not quite enough.

Overall, I am kinda thrilled with the CGEM - hope it doesnt disappoint!

I also want to give some love for Bintel - GREAT store, and I am soooo happy to have been able to get the CGEM from them. They are garanteed to get a lot of my money in the future

Just want to add - Ive powered it up, and had some inside slews. Works! Very fast to slew, but definitely noisier than the EQ6.

How did I miss it?

Look forward to future thoughts. I am looking at buying a CGEM 1100 this year.

Tim, they already have a heap of mine! I was in Melbourne this weekend (From Perth) and spent a couple of hours in their store. On Sat I flew on to Sydney and spent too long and too much in their store. Now have to work like a dog to cover the spending!

Cgem 1100

Hi Tim,
check out http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/showthread.php?t=65

I also got my CGEM 1100 from Bintel. I called Melbourne store, they called Syd who had one in stock. From ordering to receiving, it took 4 days to Tassie. Fantastic service.

The only thing 'wrong' with the mount are the Index marks on the RA and Dec rings. quote from http://www.astrophotography-tonight....-review-part1/

'the DEC axis, one index mark is on the back side of the mount and the other is on the front! I wonder if they decided to place the index marks on the back (so you can see both RA and DEC marks on same side of scope) but accidentally placed the one on the front out of habit. It looks to me that the collar can be spun around 180 degrees and it will correct that. I will probably try it! But even if it doesn’t, it should not be a problem because there is a screw hole located below the front index mark that will serve as a reference'
I used it last night and it worked perfectly.

Oh yeah, the Hand controller cord is short and feels a bit cheap.

I think we have done well buying this mount.

Cheers
George

I found out this morning that the CGEM hand controller has a built in clock. Such a simple thing, but I was always annoyed to have to re-enter the time every time I used my old HEQ5. I always wondered why neither meades autostar or Syncan put a clock in the hand controller. Guess they want people to use the over priced GPS ad on

Another win for Celestron

Let us know who the "all star" alignment goes! I am interested to hear how close it gets the polar alignment. Also, let us know how long it takes too!
I nearly bought one a week or two ago, but have delayed. I will have one by year's end (unless the Aussie dollar takes a dive!).

I am excited just reading your comments!

I have been using a cgem for 18mth now and cant really fault it for what I have used it for. When you do the goto cal always add a couple of extra stars, it will help acuracy a lot and always end your centering using the up and right keys to take up the backlash. I find all goto's dead centre and using the polar align routine i can easily image for several min at prime
focus on a c9.25 f10. All so some think the goto align routine is the polar
aligh, its not , its a seperate 1 star routine after you get your gotos done.

Thanks Mark. Good to hear first hand on the accuracy of the polar align.

My heart is sold! Just don't let the price rise over the next few months, and I will having a happy Christmas!

From what I have read, the all star routine is not a substitute for a careful drift align, but it can get really close. I will need some more
Kit before I can really give imaging a go - a dual saddle for my megrez 90 for a start. (I don't want to even really try to image with the Meade until I get an OAG.

I took mine out last night and did a 4 star alignment. Then slewed around to Saturn which was in the very centre of my eyepiece.
