Tired of Summer

It's 11:26am and 39.4 degrees outside, already 1.4 degrees past the forecast max for Perth (not uncommon). The last two weeks, asside from one day, have been nothing but 33-38 days and 24-30 nights. I'm over this!!!

The next week:
Min 25 Max 35
Min 24 Max 37
Min 24 Max 38
Min 24 Max 37
Min 25 Max 37
I get home from work and want to do some work in the observatory but it's just too hot and often humid.

It hasn't rained much for months. Well established trees and shrubs are dieing, the bush looks very thin, the local lake is at a record low and closed for swimming.

Very keenly awaiting a season change! ... any time .. now .. c'mon .. now!

Tell me about it.....the sky's been "pea soup" clouds for months here. I hope we have a cold, dry winter...might get some observing in if we do.

Sorry guy's, I have to disagree on behalf of WA ... I want a wet wet winter! Sure I'd love to be doing astronomy under clear skies, but this land is parched.

Hopefully lots of rain during the days then clear nights

Hi Roger,

It's ironic. One only gets to experience a very finite number of seasons in a lifetime
and over here in Sydney, some of us have felt "ripped off" that we didn't seem
to get a "real summer". Only the other day here, for a while it was even a little
cold. Obviously based on your experience in the West, one has to be careful of what
one wishes for.

I know there are many that would have gladly traded some of their rain for some of
your clear skies. Parts of the South West of WA could certainly do with it.

You'll get winter rain because of your southern location, but we don't want a drop up here. A wet winter would be the last straw!!!.

It seems like you are receiving another dose of the same medicine

I hope things improve soon

Yes, question is if we'll even make the average - often we don't, like last winter - dry summer 2009-2010, dry winter in 2010, now a bone dry summer 2010-2011. I wouldn't be surprised if it's not 2011 we get good rain, but have to wait until at least 2012.

Yes, careful what one wishes for - no floods please

If only we could share the weather around the country more evenly.

Yes, 2010 and 2011 summers have both been very dry, this one feels drier and longer than 2010, but that may just be because the bush didn't recover from 2010 due to the dry winter, so is suffering very heavily now. It's amazing how thin the bush is - mature 5-10m trees are seemingly just dissapearing. You look over a hillside where it was once green Jarrah forest and you can see the ground the whole way - no bush fire or such to clear it, just the thinning of the trees and understory.

Avoid WA in summer? I would go a step further and suggest avoiding the whole of Australia during summer - it's a case of either being scortched in the big dry, flooded, or ripped appart by a cyclone.

Last Feb I spent 2 weeks in Japan skiing. I think I should go live there Dec - March each year. Hmm, how much can I get for the house to finance such a stay

I am ready for summer...we've been below freezing here for long enough. I know I will complain when it gets hot here but right now even your 39 sounds good. Heck, I'll settle for 39 degrees F!

Move to Melbourne. We missed out on summer altogether and I'm not even going to look at the forecast as I'll end up in a psychiatric's chair. Summers here are a hit and miss, in other words you won't get a summer every year. Praise the lord I'm not a beach bum as well as an observer because by now I'd be in a mental asylum.

I would kill for Perf's summer weather.

Yep even here there has been no hot summer
Our hottest day was jan 1st with 42.5.

We have the cooling effect here and with hisorically february the hottest month i feel we have been ripped off.
But whos complaining.

Read this post in 4 months then most will be sick of the winter.

Cheers Kev.

How about that 17C high up your way a couple of weeks back. What a rotter.

Looking at recent daily observations, it appears NOWHERE in Victoria is averaging above 30C for this month, not even the usual spots in the NW and along the Murray. When was the last time this happened? Perhaps during the catastrophic fail of 1992?

March will start of very cold and absolutely no heat in any model forecasts so winter has already begun by the looks of it (only for Failbourne though - and just in time for the airshow)

That 17 was intense cant knock that one back.
That is an ideal temp for me.

Two of my work collegues are going to the air show.
Keep an ear out for Gleno he will be the loudest voice there and can talk over a A380.

Yep it sure is weird weather this year.

Cheers Kev.

Same here. We haven't had anything between 31 and 39C at all this month. In other words, we had one 40C day, so all the rest were under 31C. Coolest Feb I can remember.

I think Portland, Vic gets the gong for the coldest town on mainland Australia award http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/dwo/ID...8.latest.shtml

Even colder than the likes of Wilsons Prom and some of those Bass Strait Islands Even Hobart is marginally warmer

But, spare a thought for Albany, WA. Highest temp this month is 24.9C

I'd love to live down there, much milder summer and closer to the Aurora

You should all try and live up my way for a summer or two. After the first hot summer up here, you'd all be wanting to go back down south.

Our winters, though, are glorious...when they run to normal pattern, which for the last 4 years or so they haven't (been wetter and warmer than average).

You wouldn't last one summer up here, especially if we had a hot one. You have no idea what mid-high 30's and 75-100% humidity feels like. Gets really bad if the temps creep into the low-mid 40's. You can't cool down, air conditioners fail in the heat, you have a cold shower at least 2-3 times a day and yet you're sweatier and hotter afterwards, everything goes moldy and it's impossible to get rid of it, it drains you of all your energy, swimming in a pool or down at the beach is like taking a bath, it rains all the time etc etc etc.

No, if you want to see this place at its best, come in winter.
