Hi Colin,
Thanks for adding the disclaimer to the original post.
However I know that some would prefer if some effort were made to determine
the original creator. I appreciate that may not be possible or practical, particularly
for historical works. However, in this day and age of the net, just about everything
is discoverable with nothing more than a quick Google search.
For example, it took less than 15 seconds to find the image here on Wikipedia -
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Fi...ky_nps_big.jpg
and that that it was the APOD on May 8 2007 here -
http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap070508.html
and that the creator was Dan Duriscoe who is part of the US National Park
Service "Night Sky Team" who have a web site which even includes Dan's
phone number -
http://www.nature.nps.gov/air/lightscapes/team.cfm
The problem is that it works in the reverse direction just as quickly and
authors can sometimes very easily identify an offending web site,
in this case IceInSpace.
As a tip as to how easy it was to identify the original author, i simply did
a Google search on the file name Deathvalleysky_nps_big.jpg
