Rainbow lorikeet portraits

Hi all,

In a similar situation to what Dennis describes in this thread, these rainbow lorikeets that regularly visit our deck have provided a welcome bit of colour in what has been a very wet and grey December. Yesterday morning I was ready with my new 70-200 f/4 L telephoto when they visited, and captured a few images. All taken with the above lens at f/4.5, with a bit of fill-in flash from the 50D's built-in flash.

Thanks for looking!

Cheers,
Stephen

Hi Steven

A lovely set of photos that brings cheer to our dull SE Qld skies! I particularly like the preening action shots!

In my Lorikeet photos I tend to struggle with noise in the plain tones of the bright blues, reds and yellows, less so in the greens. Any sharpening really makes these areas quite crunchy so I have to tread quite carefully in processing them.

You’ve got some nice catch lights in the eyes – these really bring the bird to life!

Congrats on the new gear, you’re going to love the results!

Cheers

Dennis

Thanks Leon and Dennis!

Here's another image taken a bit later when the birds were getting increasingly impatient about getting their sugar. I think this one was saying "Give me some sugar NOW!!!"

Cheers,
Stephen
